    Chapter One

    That Girl Next Door

There was something about the girl next door, Alex, that just seemed a little off to Ken, even though he couldn’t put his finger on it. He had been renting out a modest two-bedroom house for a few months now with his buddy, Roger, but had only seen small glimpses of Alex in that amount of time. Call it a strong curiosity — not an obsession — that Ken had with her since he moved in that first day and their eyes briefly met while she was locking the door to her house and she had smiled at him.

That was all that he had needed, was her ruby red lips forming a smile as she winked at him before pulling on her oversized white sunglasses and strode with an elegance and confidence unlike he had ever seen to the BMW in her driveway and carefully got into the car before zipping off. Ken had almost dropped the couch that Roger was helping him carry and had laughed at him for already falling for the girl next door on the first day that they had lived there.

For the whole three months that he had lived next door to Alex, he had yet to utter a single word to her and only saw her for brief, passing moments while she was walking from her car to her house or vice versa. He only learned of her name when the mailman had mistakenly placed a few pieces of her mail into their mailbox. Ken quickly sat down on the couch and stared at the two pieces of mail—utility bills—that were addressed to Alex Tate. His heart had skipped a beat when he heard the deadbolt on the front door unlock and had quickly stuffed the two bills under the pillow next to him on the couch as Roger walked in, turning beet red, much like the time his overbearing mother caught him masturbating when he was 14.

Roger was so used to Ken acting strange that he had just rolled his eyes and kept walking. Ken had continued to study the two bills, even though there wasn’t much to know while he kept repeating her name to himself in his head. It took all of his courage to finally walk next door, noting that her car was in the driveway, and for him to return them. He had planned it out in his head, that he was going to ring the doorbell and play it cool, but when he finally got to the door, his heart was racing and the butterflies in his stomach were reaching the point of making him feel nauseous, so he found himself just stuffing them into the mailbox and quickly scampering off with his tail tucked between his legs.
