About this ebook

We believe that Christian giving is the secret of prosperity; but prosperity for what? We believe this: “Honour the LORD with your substance, and with the first fruits of all your increase. So shall your barns be filled with plenty, and your presses shall burst out with new wine”. But we also believe that there is a SPECIAL REASON, for filled barns and ‘bursting presses’. We believe that “the liberal soul shall be made fat and he that waters shall be watered also himself”. So, this work encourages liberality but it also wants to show what the attendant fatness and ‘watering’ is for, ultimately for?

Also, we believe this: “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom; for with the same measure that you mete withal it shall be measured to you again” – Luke 6:38. This work, being about Christian giving, is also about the critical purpose of the ‘good measure’, ‘pressed down’, ‘shaken together’ and ‘running over’ that we get when we give. So, we believe that giving leads to blessing or prosperity today. But we also know that the blessing or prosperity is for an overriding purpose.

We hold that this purpose connects to Heaven; but for the foolish it connects to Hell. While emphases in Christian literature today has hitherto been more on today’s rewards when we give (good as it is) our work emphasizes how we can secure our future (eternity with God) by being good caretakers of the filled barns, bursting presses, fatness and the good measure when we get them for we are only caretakers. We are only caretakers! And every caretaker must give account someday.

Beyond the rewards we get now for giving, there is a greater stimulus why we should give: eternity with God, for that is what Matthew 6: 20-21; 1Timothy 6:17-19 is concerned about. This is the chief purpose of giving, i.e. giving to God, His work and His Household of faith. Giving connects to Heaven. But who is to give to God, God’s work and household? We necessarily handled this in the work because nothing, perhaps, has been more abused by many a pulpits than this subject matter of giving. And since this is a Christian work and one particularly about Christian giving we cannot really do otherwise.

Genuine salvation and a life of holiness are prerequisite to giving acceptably to God, and this must be emphasized in our meetings else we will be deceiving our people, and hence we will be making them to give to feed our lust. The pages ahead have elected among others to take on this serious matter. And very related to this is the fact that righteousness is the basis of God’s prosperity or God’s provision without which we are prone to make shipwreck of our faith (and we mentioned some Bible characters as examples) and with it – righteousness, that is – God’s provision coming our ways are used to the glory of God (and we treated many Bible Characters in this regard).

The work holds also that God’s provision ‘to’ His people is for all intents and purposes ‘through’ His people. We are only caretakers, channels of distribution and must therefore be faithful stewards of them if we must give good account of them to God, the actual owner, in the day of reckoning. “Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold – Acts 4:34; or as 2 Corinthians 8:15 puts it, “He that had gathered much had nothing over; and he that had gathered little had no lack”. This is always the initial purpose of the filled barns.

This initial purpose properly engaged in helps in achieving the ultimate purpose: eternity with God. This is why we write. But genuine salvation of the soul from sin, with a life of holiness: a life given to the spirit’s leading and not to the dictates of the flesh, is sine qua non and indescribably helpful in making good both aforesaid purposes viz.: initial and u
