    Introduction

Jesus was a man of prayer, and he lived the life of prayer before his disciples. They saw him pray, they heard him pray, and they asked him to teach them how to pray (Luke 11:1).

Jesus taught by demonstration, and his disciples learned by copying him. He showed them the type of life he wanted them to live and told them to copy what they had seen and heard. It was in this relationship of master and disciple, of demonstration and imitation, that he transferred information that was alive and ready to be used.

The Holy Spirit summarized his teaching on prayer in the passages we call the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13; Luke 11:2-4). Jesus said to the disciples, ‘This, then, is how you should pray’ (Matthew 6:9). It is in an easy-to-remember and easy-to-use format, an outline or framework on which we are to build our prayers.

In this story we will be referring to Matthew’s account as the Lord’s Prayer. This prayer is divided into six sections.

When God told Joshua to lead the children of Israel into the promised land, he said to him, ‘Do not let this book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful’ (Joshua 1:8).

Meditation is the time when you ask God to give you eyes to see, ears to hear, a mind to understand, and a heart to believe. It is thinking about the Word of God and the God of the Word. Many times through this story, you will have the opportunity to stop and meditate on a particular truth. Spend time there, for this is where these truths will sink into your life, rise up in your spirit, and flow through your heart.

As you meditate, the Holy Spirit will bring to your mind spiritual truths, truths that require a response. You will know in your heart when God is requiring a response from you, so let these truths be like the seed that falls
