    About the Author

    CHAPTER 1

I can still hear group of boys enjoying themselves outside, even though it’s 5 a.m. This resort is very lively; actually I’ve never seen the walkway deserted. People barbeque, play cards, hang out at the beach and even enjoy treasure hunting at night—and I am not talking about a little kid’s game. It’s the best place for the perfect getaway.

Heaven Beach. That’s what they call it, even though it’s not full of palms; it’s full of mostly flowers, grasses, parked cars, and of course, people. The routines are the same every day. You wake up in the morning, eat your breakfast, and go out surfing or swim in the pool. Afternoons, you have your lunch, if you didn’t already share it with your friends at the café, go out again, and start playing cards or sunbathing while gossiping. Gossiping, by the way, is the main hobby of the guests in this resort. Everyone knows about everybody, whether it’s true or not. Rumours are guaranteed here.

At the evening everyone watches the beautiful sunset. Then the night goes wild with good girls gone bad, nightclubs, and singing and dancing competitions. You can’t really get your fill of it; after all, Crete has always been my first choice for summer holiday.

The group of boys outside seem to be pranking one of their friends, but I am not sure what the prank is. I guess if they have to enjoy every minute of their summer, so should I. The sun has already risen, and I’ve had enough sleep already. My head drifts back to the case that I left behind in the UK. I have to get some exercise and walk; it’s my vacation, and I should forget about work. I am not sure if the boys are still outside, but nothing can stop me from saying good morning.

I head towards the bathroom for a cold shower. The rooms here are not that fancy but rather small and simple. They would not suit anyone with claustrophobia. After a few minutes I put on my tracksuit and shoes and jog down the stairs. The weather is tropical, neither cold nor too hot, but also not very stable. You should expect rain or fog; the worst scenario is when it’s foggy at the same time as it’s very hot.

There is nobody about, but it’s fine by me. I will be seeing them later this morning or maybe in a few minutes if they are having one of their morning gatherings. Meanwhile, my aim is half an hour of walking to clear thoughts of work from my head. From a distance I can see the lifeguard, Isaac, who is very fit, with curly brown hair, though he’s not very tan for a lifeguard. He keeps quiet and minds his own business. The only time I see him talking is when he is around the resort’s DJ.

Back to the real world: I see myself walking towards him. He is watching me jog and gives me a wave. Good morning, Isaac.

Hello. What brings you up here so early? he says while settling on his bench in front of the pool.

Exercising, I say with a dismissive wave.

I will be staying here till midnight. I’ve never actually seen Heaven Beach at night.

You have if you’ve seen people dancing, I joke.

He gives me a smile and starts unpacking his iPod, medical pills, and cards from his bag.

Well, I guess I have to go. He hasn’t moved, and I decide to head back to the apartment and have some breakfast. Maybe later I’ll play football with some lads.

On my way I run into Lucas, a twenty-five-year-old computer engineering student who might be the most intelligent person I have met here when it comes to experience and knowledge of life. He speaks five languages fluently, including English of course, and I assume he is a good computer hacker. Physically, let’s say he needs to work out some, but I don’t think his looks matter to him. He keeps things simple, with a short haircut and no fancy clothes. He hardly leaves his apartment, and if he does, his Acer laptop is always with him.

I shake his hand with a smile. Where is the laptop? I ask.

I don’t need to take it with me to the church, do I, Detective Curtis? he replies with a laugh.

No, of course not, but it’s my first time seeing your hands empty.

He pulls out a USB on a lanyard around his neck and shows it to me. I guess I can’t travel without some piece of technology with me.

I give him a nudge. I’ll be seeing you today in the football pitch, right?

He nods. Yes, filming for my channel, something to share.

I shake his hand again and jog back to the apartment. There I kick off my shoes and look at the newspaper I found on my doormat. I’m glancing through it when something catches my eye. I lie down on the sofa to read about the Mafia gang members that were caught yesterday.

I heard about them few days ago when I arrived in Crete. They plant bombs underneath buildings, in hotels, or at tourist sites. In return for not
