Dedication
I dedicate this book to my dear wife who believed in me through all the challenging moments of our life where it seemed we were going in circles. You see success in me, and this is the fruit of your encouragement. I also dedicate this book to my three children: Hannah, Kharece, and Asaph, who are a blessing to me. As your personal success coach, I am dedicated to your success before I even look at the world around me. Amazingly, you have taught me so much about success in turn.
Acknowledgements
I want to acknowledge my wife who has encouraged me all the way. I also acknowledge Dr Goodwill Shana, the greatest leader I know who taught me so much about life and helped me become a great leader. To my sisters Rutendo, Tatenda, and Rudo who told me that the message I had in my heart needed to get to the world. To my three adopted children Lisa, Elias and Chantel I used you to see if these things work with amazing results. Dr Brian Mubiwa, thank you for your wisdom and constant checking on progress. Thanks for mentoring me on publishing books; your wisdom has been invaluable. To my firstborn Pesistance Gumbo, thank you for managing the family so well and allowing my wife and me to focus on the assignment. Foreword
In Jeremiah 29: 11, God spoke some words that have changed my paradigm in a significant way and will forever ring in my spirit. Having grown up under challenging circumstances, I had an ingrained belief that life was not meant to be good for me. It could be fine for others but not me. I felt that there was no one who was really interested in my success. As I went through school, these feelings were further established when I just did not seem to excel. I would ‘switch-off’ every time a challenge seemed to go beyond my mind. I never developed enough fight against failing at an assignment. I would accept that as my lot in life. I would find myself settling for being in the lowest classes and that constantly communicated that I will always be at the back-end of life.
Things, however, began to change when I became a Christian. I began to see that I had a significant part to play in creating a better world. The discovery of purpose enlightened me on God’s thoughts about me—that He is thinking thoughts of good and not evil and that God wants to bring me to an expected pre-planned prosperous end (Jer. 29: 11, paraphrased). I had to make up my mind whether God was good or bad or a mix of both. Did this depend on whether or not he was in a good mood? If he was good, then I was ready to serve him and discover his plans for my life. If God was bad or unpredictable, I was not ready to follow. Religion had taught me that God was a senile, unpredictable old man who was waiting to punish me for every wrong thing I did. But my quest for The Word (i.e. the Truth) and my diligently going to a church that taught The Truth transformed my paradigms about God and about my life. This is where I began to discover that life is governed by principles that were initiated or put in place by God.
God tells Joshua that as you go into the Promised Land, there is a prerequisite to prosperity and good success: meditating on the book of the law and keeping it in your mouth (Josh. 1: 8, paraphrased). God wanted Joshua to glean from it the principles that he needed in order to fulfil his worthwhile, God-given, ideal purpose (destiny/vision). I am a firm believer that Jeremiah 29: 11 applies to every human being on this planet. God has a plan for them just as He had a plan for Joshua and the nation he was leading. I then settled this in my heart that if God has good thoughts about me, I want to know those thoughts and I want them to come to fruition. This is when the concept (revelation even) of success was born in me. Psalm 92: 4-5 made it clear to me that I will triumph at the work of God’s hands and that his thoughts are very deep. The message Bible says, How magnificent your work, God! How profound your thoughts. It would do you and me a great deal of good to know the thoughts that God has for us and begin to walk in the reality of them.
‘You attract what you believe about yourself’
I want to encourage you with this word that God is thinking about you. Discover his ‘thought book’ and pursue (do) the things written in that book and you will see success in your life, regardless of your background and how bad the current situation is. My prayer is that you will be inspired and motivated by this book to start your walk of success. You are not doomed to failure unless you consciously decide that you are. There are no curses of failure in your life, except the ones you decree over your own destiny. The principle is ‘you attract what you believe about yourself’—as a man thinks in his heart so is he (Prov. 23: 7). You will prosper and walk in health, in proportion to the prosperity and success that is in your soul. The eight chapters that you will go through in this book will help you condition your heart and mind for success in every area of your life. There are practical sections that will help you think through some important components of your life-journey. Take time to think and write your answers in a personal journal. I encourage you to buy yourself a good success journal or open a success folder on your computer. I would encourage you to journal (document) the thoughts and events that will begin to happen in your life as you have initiated a significant journey and you will never be the same.
Preface
Research and surveys done in history say only about 2-5 per cent of all people succeed in life. These are startling statistics that I hate with a passion. It is my life mission to change this by bringing more people to a place where they are successful in life. Success is an achievable goal. I always say to people, ‘Even you can succeed’. This can be done by a set of principles that govern success. A meticulous study of one’s life will help in discovering why you are, where you are, and how you can get yourself to the desired place of success. In spending time with hundreds of people (some that I was coaching personally), I began to see the gravity of the statement that I have just made.
By asking a few strategic questions, more often than not, I can tell whether a person will (following the same trajectory) achieve success in life or not. Again I repeat, life is governed by principles; ignore them at your own peril. Follow these principles, and you can change your destiny. You are not doomed to failure by some black magic curse or some bad luck on your life. The fact that you were born a certain colour on in a certain country to a certain family has no bearing on your destiny. The stars do not determine whether or not your marriage will succeed or your business will close down. You are the master of your own destiny! You determine where you end up. Never relegate your personal growth, development, and success to somebody else or to other circumstances beyond your ability to control, this is your primary responsibility. Joshua 1: 8 tells us that if you do the word and meditate on it day and night, you will make your way prosperous and you will have good success. It’s up to you not the government, the economic conditions, or your family background; it’s up to you. Isn’t it interesting to note that your success does not even depend on God, because if it did rest on God, then we would all be successful because that is his desire for us? We all have a significant part to play in what happens in our own lives. We have to take responsibility for our lives.
Never relegate your personal growth, development, and success to somebody else or to other circumstances beyond your ability to control
Seeing we are dealing with an interesting subject, let us begin with a definition. Success has many definitions, and that is fine. There is neither a right nor wrong. One needs to have a clear picture of what he or she wants to achieve in life. For us in this lesson, the most basic understanding of success is being able to realise that dream,
