James F. Gaines, DVM, MS, DIP. ACLAM, LTCOL. USAF RET. has 50 years of experience in Veterinary Medicine. He was the first Air Force Veterinarian into Vietnam and developed the sentry dog medical care program for SE Asia. Dr. Gaines cared for over 500 AF and Army dogs. He designed the kennel system used at over 100 bases in SE Asia. He earned a degree in Lab. Animal Medicine and was assigned to conduct Dental and Medical research with the US Navy. He worked with a variety of species in both fields. While stationed in Egypt he dealt extensively with the camels used by the Egyptian Army and did research on bats. Upon retiring from the USAF he opened a private practice specializing in birds and exotic animals in addition to dogs and cats. He has bred purebred dogs and for 15 years bred parrots very successfully. He has supervised dog training classes over the years. He has dealt with a great variety of animals and animal situations and is well qualified to talk about the variety of subjects in this collection of essays.
