    INTRODUCTION

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.

    Martin Luther King, Jr.

For years I have been planning to write this book. The seed was planted after accepting an invitation to be the guest speaker at a number of events arranged by my former grade school teacher Ms. Sharon Wrocklage at Detroit Eastside Vicariate over the course of my lifetime. After the end of each event, I was flabbergasted by the general interest from the public to want to learn more about what I have been able to successfully achieve and be apart of in my 33 years of living. Despite the initial enthusiasm in my observations, there was still that settle grey area in my mind of how I could properly format these ideas and expand them into laws that I could properly present to a broader audience around the world. My purpose for writing Knowing Your Place is to share some of the strategies for success that I have used personally as well as ascertained during my journey. The laws that you will read in this book have played an intricate role in my growth as a person. As we all search for ways to increase our chances for success in our life daily, these laws that I share with you will serve as just a foundation to support you along the way. Before formatting the structure to this book, I had come to a familiar place of struggle that we all face at one point or another in life and the one thing that I discovered was that the same laws had guided me over the course of my life. As my territories of life were enlarged, I noticed that these very same laws were practiced by others from various cultures who’ve also encountered success.

After reflecting on the amount of eclectic information that I had gathered from my many experiences in life together with my interaction with others, drove me to share how these laws have helped change my life as well. A very large part of being successful, is giving back and sharing your talents with the rest of the world in a positive manner. Another part of success however is the consumption of self. Preparing yourself to be the best you can be. Generally, this comes first before you are able to share your skills and talents with the rest of the world. It’s natural when trying to carve out a lane for yourself to be a bit self-indulging. True fulfillment comes when you are able to empower others while sharing your gifts.

After speaking at a number of events and interacting with different cultures daily, I realized that I would be selfish if I did not at least make an attempt to properly structure my ideas into laws and allow others to have access to them. The assortment of people that I have been blessed and fortunate enough to meet thus far have served as an inspiration to all walks of life. Be aware that, in no way am I telling you that the laws I’m providing for you are the only logical approach to having a successful life. Instead, these are things that have worked for me and have been passed along from others who have been instrumental in my success. In return, I have shared many of these laws that I have written down in this book with others in smaller circles. Now, I would like to share them with the entire world.

The laws in this book are simple, but it can be the simplest things that are most often the hardest to surrender to. I first began sharing these particular set of laws with others outside of my immediate surroundings after speaking at a Michigan Youth Day event a couple years back with world renowned educator and personal trainer Luther Big Lu Campbell. Lawyer and retired judge Greg Mathis was the keynote speaker for the evening. Immediately following the program, Big Lu suggested that I speak more about the information that I shared or take an even further step by writing them in a book to share with others. As I’m writing this, I get excited about the fact that I’m sharing this with you after tucking the idea away that was presented to me by Big Lu many years ago. I began formatting the laws that you’ll read in this book after facing a setback of my own.

So, if you are reading this book because you have come to a stumbling block and need to get back on track or just want insight on how to become better at your respective profession, I welcome you. Either way is perfect as these laws are designed to provide you with a foundation in your daily life. The objective is to spread this message across the universe and touch as many people possible. This has been apart of my makeup for my entire existence and you will begin to learn more after you have read this book. My travels abroad have allowed me to connect with many people from a variety of cultures and religious backgrounds. Therefore, these laws are applicable to anyone who takes the time to embrace them. Some of these laws have been presented before and should sound a bit familiar to you, I’m here as reassurance that they do indeed work.

As for myself, I grew up as a scrawny little kid, the youngest of three boys raised in a single parent home on the Eastside of Detroit, Michigan by my mother (Crystal Mitchell) and grandmother in the midst of one of the largest crack cocaine epidemics to sweep the nation’s front during the 1980’s and 1990’s. Instead of conforming to my surroundings, I sought out other outlets to provide me with examples of how to obtain success. However, my pathway to success like many others included hurdles along the way. My path included athletics, economic opportunity and education. It was the blossoming relationships with the two women in my life (mother and grandmother), my older brothers (Adrian and Andre) and Uncle Craig that would serve as a vital key to my success. This is also how and where I developed a list of the laws that I will present to you.

In 1997, I graduated from Detroit East Catholic High School after capturing a Class D State Championship while playing under legendary and now deceased Coach Dave Soules in basketball. I was selected a High School McDonald’s All-American (Honorable Mention) as a senior. Academically, I
