What a Comeback!
()
About this ebook
"Challenges are gifts that force us to search for a new center of gravity. Don't fight them. Just find a new way to stand."― Oprah Winfrey
"There's nothing as exciting as a comeback - seeing someone with dreams, watching them fail, and then getting a second chance" -Rachel Griffiths
I am sure we have faced unexpected situations, at some stage in our life. Life has always been unpredictable for everyone. Be it a child or the most powerful person, no one is spared! Things do not turn out as we predict them to be. This is true for every profession and individual.
The most successful man or woman will vouch for the above statements. It also holds true for every relationship, at some point in our lives. As parents, when we raise our children or hold on to a failing relationship, these unpredictable situations follow us. It becomes difficult for us to overcome them.
It is when failure stares at us, Clawing back seems a distant reality.
A lot of us believe that it is not everyone's cup of tea. There are a chosen few who have a strong character and stage a comeback form any situation. But our mind has other plans. A comeback is manufactured! And is the building block for a new life of hope and happiness. We all stage a comeback sooner a later but the time taken differs with every individual.
The intention of writing the book is to make the reader realize the automation of thoughts in their present decision making. It will also pave way for breaking these fixed ideas which were always causing hindrances in their growth and relationship.
What a comeback! Is a semi-fiction and an inspiring journey of 10 friends who go through torrid times in their lives.
The book gives us an insight into the functioning of the thought processes that govern our responses both in favorable and in tough times. The stories of Sam and his friends make the readers realize that they too can be superheroes in their lives and they do not need to wait for a miracle, to come up with the right decisions in life.
The book is based on the laws of neuroplasticity which have been formulated based on neuropsychology and the changes taking place in our brain. These laws were always existing in our lives but we never realized that these were making our thought process autonomous (without our conscious control).
Each and every story is about a common man, his everyday problems and his tirade against the uncertainties of life. The author gives a journey into the brain of the characters and how the brain functions and overcomes difficult situations.
This is the first time when someone has tried to explain the complex mechanisms of neuroscience with the help of stories. The mixture of stories and science has been carefully woven in such a way that a fiction reader who is interested in stories will gain an insight into their fixed viewpoints and its correlation to their past events.
"No one has ever achieved great heights if they have not mastered the art of the comeback." Dr. Chirag Jain

Dr. Chirag Jain has been practicing in the field of medicine since the last 13 years. He has trained more than 10000 human brains with his 4 R theory and has done interventions based on the understanding human brain and its neuronal circuits with the laws of neuroplasticity formulated by him. He is also a mindfulness educator and strongly believes that the cause of suffering is not the brain which overthinks but the fixed mind-set. We all know that fixed mind-set exist but very few have explored the reasons and the consequences of a fixed mind-set. The sole aim of writing the book is to give strategies and create awareness in the readers how these hard-wired thoughts increase our sufferings and resilience is not a luxury but a choice. “To persevere, I think, is important for everybody. Don't give up, don't give in. There's always an answer to everything.”-Louis Zamperini

Preface
I
t was a cold winter day, somewhere in the month of December in Mumbai, India in the year 2014. I was returning from my clinic after having a hectic day of consultation. Although I was tired, I had to attend a family get-to-gather at a restaurant which had recently opened in town. This was one of the rare occasions when I was able to reach on time as I had strict instructions from my family. Being a Saturday night, the restaurant was jam-packed. I located my family’s table. Everyone was surprised at me being on time. It was a long time since I had met them.
I was getting disturbed by a lady’s voice. Turning my attention to the table, I overheard a very interesting conversation between a mother and a sixteen-year-old teenage girl. The mother was recollecting the daughter’s mistakes and shortcomings, and how they will be affecting her future. She had a never-ending, long list and the teenager was simply staring at her in disbelief and disgust. She tried to interrupt but it seemed that the mother was well-prepared and her tirade of complaints was unstoppable. When the mother ran out of words, the teenager shot back with a calm tone Mom if there are so many issues, could you also give me the solution for them. Before you interrupt me, you can also tell me what was the root cause of these issues and what did you do about it for the last sixteen years? Also, would you also want me to point out the problems which I have inherited from you, out of the long list you have told me?
Her mother was shocked at her daughter’s candid and frank reply to her onslaught. More than anger she realized what she said was making sense. She looked at her daughter timidly as a small girl who is caught red-handed by someone doing mischief. She told her that she had realized that her daughter had grown up. Any mother wouldn’t want her daughter to go through the same problems.
This conversation was like any other conversation between teenage kids and their parents. However, this made me realize that there was a lot more meaning in what the kid was trying to tell her parent. As a parent of two children, I do understand that all parents try to teach kids, skills, and behaviors, so they can be better human beings and face the harsh realities of life boldly. Is parenting the only cause responsible for the teen’s behavior? Does society too play a role?
On researching further I realized the complexity of a teenagers mind. The effects on their blooming minds, due to the bombardment of information that they are exposed to as they enter adult life. I had always been well versed with the anatomy of the brain, but as I dived deeper into the newer research done by neuroscientists worldwide, a whole new world of the mind and its functioning opened up in front of me. Reading through it not only from a neuroscientist’s point of view, also the perspective of neurophysics and psychology made me see the broader picture. How the new neurons are created and the properties which govern the formation of these new pathways?
I started studying behaviors of my students and tried to analyze the process of a comeback. I realized that there are many issues which were half explained or left out and felt there was a void in individual understanding about the process of a comeback. So I formulated the findings into ten different laws to make the process of a comeback more explainable. There are old habits and behaviors which are interfering in our lives. Some have defined this as fixed thinking. How does this fixed thinking affect our decision-making? Why does our mind get so tempted to get into a mode of fixed thinking? What is the role of Mindfulness in modulating thought processes?
It has always been possible to deal with these complex circuits of a human mind and overcome a fixed mindset for some individuals. However, there are many who struggle as they get entangled in difficult situations.
Based on these laws I have devised a strategy using 4 R’s mainly Realization, Raising an anchor, Rewiring and Redefining. Mindfulness and its role in Neuroplasticity also came as a revelation to me as I witnessed remarkable changes in people who had enrolled with me in the program. I realized that it was possible for everyone to overcome their behavioral issues caused by these automated pathways. The‘4R’ strategy is more attuned to the laws which are formulated and form the essence of the interventions.
The next hindrance which was pointed out to me by most of the people was that although the laws are one or two sentences long, they were difficult to understand and relate to their life. Hence, the laws have been explained in the form of individual stories of triumph of day to day life. All the stories are interconnected and are happening in the same time period. The book narrates the stories about Sam and his old mates who go through a horrid time in life and how they come back from those situations. It takes the reader on a journey inside each and every character’s mind and how they get entangled in an uncontrollable situation.
Laws of Neuroplasticity ©
1. The degree of attention is directly proportional to the mental force of a thought.
2. Minds like other planets and organisms tend to function in automation. It is the level of awareness that enables us to break this automation and make conscious and path-breaking decisions.
3. The more the mind functions in automation the more are the miseries and unhappiness’s it experiences.
4. The default state of the mind is awareness i.e. happiness....it’s the inclination and dependence of the mind to save the information and relate it to the emotions generated that gives rise to turbulence and noise in a human mind. The more we believe in what we feel rather than what it is, the more unhappiness we generate.
5. Being positive is directly related to the extent of being aware of the moment.
6. Competitive neuroplasticity is a phenomenon taking place every moment of our life and is highly underrated by our experiences.
7. The more the mind believes in the images it forms and the related past emotions the more it suffers. The lesser it believes in the images it forms, the more the scope for awareness and resolution of difficult situations.
8. In our pursuit to mix automation with awareness, we have evolved from part of the creation to so-called rulers of creation....in the journey we have migrated from being a part of stillness of nature to the slayers of our own peace and tranquillity.
9. The more we are aware of this automation in the mind, the lesser fuel we give to these brain pathways to become rigid and fixed. The more fixed and rigid our thinking, the lesser we are in control of our behaviors and reactions.
10. Awareness is a habit difficult to cultivate because of man's greed for social interactions.

Sam
The degree of attention is directly proportional to the mental force of a thought.
S
am was a bank manager and was working with an international bank for the past 15 years. He had a daughter Anna and a loving wife Jane, who had always been by his side and supported him in his good as well as bad times. He had a team of co-workers who were constantly willing to take up the most difficult tasks in his office under his supervision. Life had been beautiful until recently.
Sam from his college days had great interpersonal skills and would communicate with his friends and fellow students. He was very popular amongst his college mates because of his excellent communicative skills. At times he would tease his beautiful wife, that she wouldn’t have noticed him if it weren’t for his communication skills. His journey to the bank manager’s post was a roller coaster ride that was filled with hardships and periods.
There was a moment in his life, where Sam had almost given up on himself because of the unfair and manipulative behavior of his HR head. He had almost decided to quit, but it was because of Jane that he decided to hold on and trust himself. His HR head didn’t like him and would find out the minutest of his mistakes. This had created a sense of self-doubt. He was hesitant in his decisions and would, of-late stammer in his meetings with his clients. Sam knew that the negative feedback was taking a toll on his mind. He knew whatever his HR head was telling him was untrue. It was motivated because of his clout amongst his colleagues. But he simply couldn’t stop his mind from thinking because of the negative jibes from him.
It was his wife Jane, who came to his rescue and made him realize that he will be able to overcome these difficult times. She would spend hours with him, reminding him how he used to solve the problems of his friends and relatives in a jiffy. She showed him videos of the speeches, he had delivered in various office, for which he had been praised by one and all. How he was hailed by one and all for his non-judgmental decisions! How they had run away from their house in spite of the opposition from her parents!
Jane couldn’t help noticing the mischievous smile on his face. She knew the HR had damaged his self-confidence over a period of time. But she trusted Sam and his ability to bounce back. She knew he will "Come back". With all her efforts, Sam started gaining his confidence back and was overlooking the negative comments from the HR and focussed on his work. He would try to logically reason out with him and let go. Sam avoided getting into an unnecessary conversation.
As luck and fortune favor the brave, his tormentor was transferred and Sam was back to his usual self again. The incident had convinced him that he was a great fighter and could solve any problem if he had Jane by his side.
But now he was facing a different problem, about which even Jane was clueless. His daughter Anna who was 13 years old, a teenager, was obsessed with electronic gadgets. She hardly spoke to anyone in the house since the last one year and would spend most of her time, either playing on the laptop or chatting with the school friends. Although Jane and Sam were both working parents, they would spend at least two to three hours every day with Anna. But she was obsessed with games, social media and would only reply to them in a few sentences.
Sam and Jane, like most parents, realized the need to intervene. They went on a vacation to her favorite place, Switzerland, with the hope that she gets rid of her obsession. But even there, she would be chatting with her friends or playing games. She was disinterested in sightseeing and spending time with the family. This sudden change in their child’s behavior was exasperating for them.
This change was unacceptable for Sam and he would have multiple arguments with her when he would tell her to stop using gadgets. Of all the things in life he hated indiscipline and would feel hurt when she back-answered him. This was way beyond his patience levels and he finally decided to put restrictions on the use of gadgets in his daughter’s life. Endless chains of arguments between the father-daughter started. This completely shattered the peace and harmony in the family. It became a usual affair when Sam would come from his work, there would be an argument on the dinner table, which would end up with someone sleeping hungry. Jane tried to make both of them understand but deep down her heart, she agreed with what Sam was doing. She was worried about her dropping grades and was scared that this obsession could lead to severe psychological and behavior problems for Anna in the near future. She knew after speaking to other parents, that this was happenings in most of the houses. Children obsessed with gadgets leading to arguments. But unlike other children, Anna was defiant. Jane could not let her child destroy herself and would try to explain her most of the times. But even her patience was running out.
This went on for quite a while, until one fine day, Anna suddenly ran away from the house. They tried to find her everywhere, but she was not to be located. They found a note in her room saying Papa and Mama, if you have so much of a problem with me and my ways of life, it is best that I leave the house, so you and I can live in peace.
Sam panicked and went to his friend Joe, the Sergeant and registered a missing complaint. They sent out search parties to locate her. Sam felt the same sinking feeling which he had felt years back, only to find that his wife Jane, was not in a state to support him. Actually, he was more worried, that she would get a nervous breakdown. It was making him feel really lonely and scared, as he started worrying about all the negative things which could have happened. Two days went by and she was nowhere to be found. He started worrying about, how she would survive as she did not have any money. On the other side, Jane was crying and had stopped eating food for the last two days. He felt drained and was short of ideas on how to find her. The fear of her being in trouble, and the guilt of being too strict with her, was making it impossible for him to sleep even for a second. He was known as a problem solver,
and now he was getting stuck. He had always helped people in more grave and difficult circumstances, but why was he unable to rescue his family from this dreadful event. He needed to speak to someone.
Our brain is highly neuroplastic in nature and you can know more about it in the last chapter on science. But there is one more quality of our brain. The brain is lazy in nature. Especially, as we grow up, it doesn’t like to work hard. If the brain is lazy, then how can we perform these complex tasks and deal with complicated situations? How can we come with so many ideas and thoughts in our workplace or personal lives? Also, the brain is constantly functioning throughout the day. Approximately we have 60000 thoughts in a span of
