    About the author

This book is dedicated to all my friends and family.

    Thank you all.

    Introduction

IT WAS THE feature race and Crash Boomer was the driver most liked and picked to win the championship. Lining up in the center of the track, where he knew his son Chris and his wife would be seated to cheer him on.

With a good feeling that he’s going to win, as everyone was counting down from five, four, three, he looked up at Chris and smiled, giving him two thumbs up just as the green flag was dropped.

At eight years old Chris has never missed a derby his dad has drove. Knowing one day he would like to be in a car beside his dad. As the derby went on, crash was doing great there was only 6/20 cars left, and his car was one of the best ones running. Everyone knew he was going to be the new champion, but no one realized that crashes gas tank had shifted, and rubbed a hole in the tank. Gas had the back floorboard covered and was leaking out a hole in the floor onto the ground. Then all of a sudden crashes car had stalled in the middle of the track. Number 46, Bob Smith seeing that crashes car had stalled, was going to take advantage of the situation. Turning the front of his car towards the right rear wheel of crashes car he then smashed down on his throttle and slammed into crashes wheel like a wrecking ball hitting a brick building. The impact was enormous, the front of Bob’s car bowed upward. Both cars got locked together.

Crashes car finally started again and he was trying his best to get unlocked from Bob’s car. As crash was moving back and forth, Bob’s bumper was against crashes rear tire and crashes tire finally blew out. Now the bumper was on the wheel while it was turning and sparks were flying everywhere. Then it happened.

The sparks had caused the gas to ignite from under crashes car. Bob saw the flames and Chris saw them to and was trying to get his dad’s attention, but was too late as crashes car exploded into a ball of fire.

By the time they got the fire out, and pulled crash from the car, Chris and his mother knew that their father and husband had died.

    Chapter I

    THE REQUEST

10 YEARS HAD past; it was a great shining spring morning when Chris had woke. Lying in bed and he stared at the ceiling and groaned happy birthday to himself. Wishing he didn’t have to get up and go to work, he pulled his blanket over his head. Then his mom yelled, Chris get out of bed breakfast is almost ready.

I’m up, replied Chris. We’ll get a move on birthday boy; you know Jenny will be here in about half an hour to pick you up.

Yes mother, I know. Chris just rolled over and pulled his pillow over his head.

A couple minutes later Chris’s mom yelled again, Christopher James Boomer get your rear in gear!

Okay! Okay! I’m up! Chris replied. After he got up and took a shower he went downstairs and sat down at the table. Well it’s about time you got down here; your ham and eggs are getting cold.

Mom it’s my birthday, give me a break Chris said.

I’ll give you a break, where you want it? She said with a smile.

Funny mom! Ha! Ha! Chris said.

Eat your breakfast before it gets any colder young man.

Chris started eating when his mom asked what you want for your birthday?

Chris thought for a minute and said, I would like to have the money I need to fix my car. That old piece of junk isn’t worth fixing up. Why don’t you sell it and buy a new car?

You know why, it was dad’s car. Chris replied.

Yeah, but even your dad knew when to get rid of something. He would either sell it or…

    Or what? Chris asked.

Never mind she said with a half frown.

At that time, there was a knock the door.

    I’ll get it. Chris said.

He went to the door and opened it.

It was Jenny; she stood there with her long brown hair pulled back into a ponytail, wearing coveralls, with her dark shades resting on her nose.

    Hey Jenny said.

Are you ready birthday boy? Jen asked.

I’m just finishing breakfast, come on in.

They both walked back to the dining room. Oh hi Jenny, do you want any breakfast?

No thanks Mrs. Boomer, I just ate. Jenny said.

So Chris, how’s it feel to be the big 19?

The same as being 18, I guess. he said with a smile.

How’s your mom and dad doing? I haven’t seen them for a while.

    Mrs. Boomer asked Jenny.

They’re doing fine. Which reminds me, Chris, Dad has something to show you when we get to work? He wants us to hurry."

It’s probably the parts for my car, but I don’t have the money for them. Chris said with a smirk on his face, looking at his mom.

Get to work you two, you don’t want to keep Mr. Myers waiting.

I’ll talk to you tonight mom, I’m planning on staying in town for a while after work so no surprise birthday party please.

Okay sweetheart, stay out of trouble.

You know me mom; I always stay out of trouble. Chris said as Jenny and he walked out the door. Later Mrs. Boomer. Jenny Said. See you later Jenny, and tell your mom and dad I said hi. Maybe this weekend you can come over for supper.

Bye mother! Chris said with an intense look on his face.

As they walked out to the car, Chris asked Jenny, Can I drive please?

So Jenny threw him the keys with a smile.

As Chris and Jenny drove off, Mrs. Boomer watch them leave the driveway thinking of the conversation Chris and she had about crash.

As they drove down the road, Chris seemed to be in his own little world.

What’re you thinking about? Jenny asked.

    What? Chris asked.

"You! You’re sitting there with a look on your face like some things bothering you.

I don’t know, it’s just every year around this time mom seems so different.

What do you mean? She seems fine to me."

I don’t know, let’s forget about it so what does your dad want?

He wouldn’t tell me, he said he would let you know when we get there.

When they finally got to town they pulled into Myers repair shop.

When they walked into the shop, behind the counter stood Jim Myers.

He stood a little shorter than Chris and walked with a limp, from a truck wreck he had a year ago. Well you two got here earlier than usual. Jim said with a smile on his face.

Chris drove if that tells you anything. Jenny said.

Hey! I kept it under 70!" Chris replied and poked Jenny in her ribs to make her jump.

Jen why don’t you get everything opened up, I need to talk to Chris about something.

Sure! I got a start working before everyone else while the men have a chat. That’s so sexes!

Jen! Jim said with a frown on his face.

Yes daddy! I’m right on it! she said as she hurried into the repair shop.

Kids. You’re lucky Chris; you don’t have any yet, especially like Jenny."

Chris just stood there with a smile on his face.

Do you want any coffee? Jim asked Chris.

No thanks. Chris replied as Jim was pouring himself a cup of coffee.

Chris noticed a big stack of poster boards on Jim’s desk.

What’s on the poster boards? Chris asked Jim.

That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. Jim said as he sat down and handed Chris one of the poster boards. Chris stood there and read the poster and smiled.

He jokingly asked Jim, what, you want me to help you build the Derby car?

Yeah. Something like that Chris. Jim said.

Chris kind of chuckled and asked, "Why would you want to run a Derby?

    To break your other leg?"

It wouldn’t be for me to run Chris. Jim said with a serious look on his face.

    Well who then? Chris asked.

You Chris, I want you to run it. Chris’s smile slowly disappeared.

Before you say anything Chris, listen to me. I’ve known you from the day you were born, and I knew your mom and dad even longer. I don’t want to bring up any bad memories son, but derbies have been in your family’s blood for years. Your dad always said that he dreamt that someday you and he both would team up and drive together when you were old enough.

Dream! What dream? My dad died in a damn Derby! What
