INTRODUCTION
I decided to write this book as a journal or memoirs of a sort for my children to better understand me as the person I have become over the past two decades. I have lived my life with passion, as I discovered through trial and error what life and living was all about. Believe me; I had it all wrong, as the majority of us do. But I lived to tell about it and now I am scribing it so that my offspring, whom I love so dearly, will have some side notes of mine to assist them in their quests for living their best lives.
Born to the daughter of a sharecropper August 19, 1950, in a little rural town of Arkansas I consider myself very fortunate to have progressed to a point of writing a book or even thinking of writing a book. The odds of me succeeding at even graduating from high school was not a given at the time and place of my birth. All my life I have struggled to survive and not until recently have I begun to really appreciate living. And when I say living,
I mean living in the moment and enjoying each moment, good, bad, or indifferent. Life is so very precious, I constantly thank my creator for allowing me to live and experience all that I have. To my children, I hope that in your lifetime you do one fourth of the things that I have done in the last 20 years of my life, then you can say you have really lived. Once what became important was discovered, life became very easy. It is not about the material things that one should strive to accomplish, it’s all about the spiritual experience that surpasses all.
If there is one thing I would like to impart with my children and the world is the values of taking care of one’s physical self, emotional and spiritual self, all being a multi-facetted project. So begins this manuscript, as a road map especially for my dear children, a road map to good health, happiness and wealth. Information which will assist you in derailing some of the unexpected challenges of life as related to your health. Without your health, you will have a zero bank balance although you may be a millionaire. You will not be able to enjoy your fortunes. Often time it is a minute by minute challenge, depending on what our circumstances are. For myself, I was fairly healthy as a child, with the normal childhood diseases, measles, mumps, strep throat and colds. Having five pregnancies, and four living children I did not have any major complications with deliveries. My health issues started late in life, as it seemed with everything else. I was a very thin adolescent and did not have a weight problem until after I entered my forties. So being basically healthy the majority of my life did not prepare me for what lay ahead. I had not done my homework and talked with family members about the medical history of any of my relatives. Had I known then what I know now, I would have asked the questions ahead of time and could have possibly done some damage control.
As I entered my early forties I began to have problems with my knees and eventually had to have three knee replacements, the left knee was done twice. The knee replacements prompted me to begin to exercise as the medial compartment, weight-bearing area of the knee was compromised from a work related injury.
Sickness and injury have always been a catalyst to motivate me toward personal physical and spiritual improvement. It is my desire to share with my readers what I did for myself, through trial and error to get to a place of education and awareness regarding health and wellness. My goal is to empower my readers. Doing so frees me because I am giving back what was given to me. At times the costs were extremely high, and other times it came free with no strings attached. I am proud to say that it has been a process and continue on as a lifestyle, sharing my experience, strength and hopes for others to achieve their highest expectations and maintain good health ethics. Enjoy the journey to health and wellness!
I will cover a variety of topics to include nutrition, exercise, spiritual wellness, meditation, visualization and discussion on disease and cures. It is my intention to address these topics from my experiences and experiences of those who have touched my life. I don’t have a patent on what is right, these are things that have worked for me and I have included documented facts from the research that I have done.
Being a person who likes to express themselves, I have also included various quotes from persons of interest. Some of the quotes are from famous people that we all know and then there are quotes from my life’s experiences and from individuals I have met on my journey. Having been called to share my experience, strength and hope too many, may the many that pick up this work and be inspired to take a similar journey. Your journey may well be different from mine but truly all of our paths cross at some juncture, for this is creations plan. With gladness and truly a grateful heart, I share all that I am on these pages and all that I hope to be come forth from the living well within my spirit that connects with yours. Life is grand, wear it well.
A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes.
—Gandhi
Chapter One
The medical condition which has challenged me most is that of hypertension. It is hereditary and because I had not educated myself about the disease, many challenges arose for me. So I would like to discuss the issues of hypertension, or high blood pressure.
What is high blood pressure?
High blood pressure (HBP) or hypertension means high pressure (tension) in the arteries. Arteries are vessels that carry blood from the pumping heart to all the tissues and organs of the body. High blood pressure does not mean excessive emotional tension, although emotional tension and stress can temporarily increase blood pressure. Normal blood pressure is below 120/80; blood pressure between 120/80 and 139/89 is called pre-hypertension
, and a blood pressure of 140/90 or above is considered high.
The top number, the systolic blood pressure, corresponds to the pressure in the arteries as the heart contracts and pumps blood forward into the arteries. The bottom number, the diastolic pressure, represents the pressure in the arteries as the heart relaxes after the contraction. The diastolic pressure reflects the lowest pressure to which the arteries are exposed.
An elevation of the systolic and/or diastolic blood pressure increases the risk of developing heart (cardiac) disease, kidney (renal) disease, hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis or arteriosclerosis), eye damage, and stroke (brain damage). These complications of hypertension are often referred to as end-organ damage because damage to these organs is the end result
