About this ebook

We are all interested in knowing who we are and the purpose of our lives. Our healing gives us the opportunity to understand ourselves better and therefore achieve better health. When we take more responsibility for our healing, we can expand more our levels of knowledge and welfare.

During the journey you will take upon reading my book, you will fi nd the opportunity to share with me my sincere wishes to fi nd a better welfare for ourselves, as human beings, and the universe in general.

I was born in Surata, Colombia. I fi nished my medical studies at the medical school of the Universidad del Valle and University Hospital in Cali, Colombia; the Lutheran Medical Center in Cleveland; and the Charity Hospital of New Orleans, Tulane Division, where I did my specialization in obstetrics and gynecology.

Through my human experience, I have been in different places and at different times, but in the deepest core of my being, there has always been a need for a better relationship with myself and with my outer world.

I have always wanted to vividly live more consciously, my knowledge and my experience of holistic medicine as integral as a hologram. My relationship with nature, my sports, among others, and the need to live in a family that is increasingly healthier physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually as well have been the key drivers of my enigmas and dilemmas in finding my self healing. Let us create more hope.

    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

"I have always wanted to be more.

While I live and love this opportunity of life, I feel complete and enough".

I was born in Surata, Colombia, in the Andean mountains in South America, in the year 1944. My feelings and understanding of the family I decided to live with gave me the possibilities needed to grow and be someone better.

Even if all the education and experiences I have encountered in my life are not considered ideal, they provided me the essential means to become what I am now.

I was exposed to sufficient love, care, and understanding to be able to assume responsibility of my deep needs and to grow up spiritually. Despite all the ups and downs in my life, including the traumatic and difficult passages during my journey through this human experience, I realize that there was no other way for me to be able to reach what I am. I have deep feelings of gratitude toward all those experiences. In other words, my past experiences gave me the background needed to realize my dreams of self-growth.

I always believe there was something better, even before I started to be aware of what I needed in order to wake up into the realization of my dreams. My early needs of healing and self-growth, combined with my future experiences of self-healing in my life, helped me understand even better that I was not only looking for physical well-being, but also looking for ways to satisfy my main needs of self-security, giving priority to the realization of my most precious positive ambitions.

Just like any other human being, my childhood, my teenage years, and my early adulthood have always offered me experiences, including the needed contradictions toward a self-realization that never ends, but every day gets easier, interesting, and more satisfactory. During my youth and adolescence, in a certain way, I found the support of my friends, but I also found the duality of others that instead of providing me with support, they offered me threatening experiences, not amicable, that incremented my shame.

I have always wanted to reflect and find places of solitude, and inside me there is always a profound need to improve the understanding and appreciation of my experiences. I discovered sports and did successfully. The success and glory that I expected were very well reattributed. I always have wanted to score, and when I played soccer or any of my favorite sports, I scored the most.

Speaking of my love for sports, with ignorance but also with good intention and believing that my experiences would be appropriate for my children, I introduced them to soccer, which, in those times, was just starting in the United States. However, more often than not, I would say that these experiences were not the best for them. I did not realize that my children might be considering something better for themselves. Beyond the results, the truth is that every day, I find those experiences to have a greater beneficial meaning.

I have always longed for better knowledge. Regardless of the field in which I decided to indulge in, I learned more and obtained the finest coach license available in those times, classified as A by the United States Soccer Federation.

The teachings in the school of medicine at the Universidad del Valle in Cali helped me direct my day to day with a more integral and holistic experience in medicine, an experience that deep in my mind, I was always ready to receive and share. I am proud to say that I was one of the best students in the school of medicine and considered as one of the best soccer players. While playing for the Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia, and after participating in one of the national championships, I was offered the opportunity to advance my soccer career to a professional level. I was grateful with the offer, but I decided to continue with my studies in medicine.

I got married before coming to the United States, and I am lucky to have three boys. We provided each other the necessary experiences in order to make our family a dwelling place of love and care and a better world that I have always wanted.

I came to the US with the aim to continue my specialization in medicine. I did my internship at the Lutheran Medical Center, a hospital associated with the Case Western Research. I specialized in obstetrics and gynecology in one of the most famous and traditional hospitals in the United States: the Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, Tulane University division. Furthermore, during my study and practice in medicine, my desire for something more integral have been partially numbed by the surgical, rational, and material view of our culture. I could say that my romantic dreams, my attraction to the profound and ethereal, were exposed to the complexity of a society and medical politics mainly directed toward the physical body; I freely accepted them with lots of curiosity, gratitude, and responsibility. This reality offered me the opportunity to better understand how complex we are. I would not say whether it was correct or not. I would say it was appropriate for me to experience and get more tools to continue my learning. Just like past experiences, the opportunity I had during my training in the US brought me great feelings of thankfulness, helping me realize the infinite roles we play in our lives.

Life supplies me, and still does, with many experiences, including the ones I have had as a patient. Some of them have been difficult but are more appreciated as days pass by. I can say that my courage, my will, my discipline, my hope, and something deeper in me helped me get a higher benefit from those experiences.

Regardless of the different forms of training and practice in medicine—including my private practice for more than forty years, practicing in other general medical clinics, emergencies, and different social and cultural levels, such as Ninth Ward in New Orleans and the emergency room at Charity Hospital—my curiosity toward exploring more integral and spiritual levels of healing has taken me farther than just my specialty as an obstetrician and gynecologist. In Colombia, in different places—including the year of practice I did in one of the rural zones of the country, which was required by the government before getting my medical license—I was exposed to other healing ways that depended on the idiosyncratic culture of the population. My nature has always been to find alternative and easier ways of healing. Once I was well established in my practice of obstetrics and gynecology, I started to expand successfully my training and practice to other fields of medicine, including what we can call a more integrative and holistic medicine.

I have been lucky and have been able to have the highest qualifications, and currently, I am certified by the following entities:

    -   Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology

    -   Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology

    -   Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Hypnosis

    -   Diplomate of the American Board of Urgent Care Medicine

    -   Founding Diplomate of the American Board of Holistic Medicine

    -   Diplomate of the American Academy of Pain Management

    -   Diplomate of the American Board of Anti-aging and Regenerative Medicine

I have also been certified as an instructor of Primordial Sound Meditation and the Creation of Health by Dr. Deepak Chopra.

I have always wanted to share my knowledge; and I have done it on the radio, television, newspapers, magazines, and articles, mostly in Spanish. I continue to be part of the staff at the Tulane Medical School in the department of obstetrics and gynecology as an assistant clinical professor. Today I continue the path toward finding easier and effective ways of healing.

Science and the art of healing are very complex, just as much as humans are. My hope is that eventually, we will be able to understand more at an experiential level that health is a choice of our conscience. I dream of a time when we can actually feel that better choice in our conscience and being able to realize that although that choice of joy, satisfaction, and contentment is enough for that moment, we will always have the freedom for better choices.

Through my journey in my human experience, I have been in different places and times, but inside the deep nucleus of my being, there has been always a need for a better relationship with myself, with my reality, with my soul, with my spirit, with my superior power, and with my divinity. My journey through eternity and infinity keeps giving me opportunities to self-healing and, as a consequence, to make it easier and better the power of sharing the well-being that automatically is inherent to our process of self-healing.

    PREFACE

A fter many years of experience in the field of medicine, I have decided to gather the deepest conclusions of what it means to evolve within the continuous changes in our lives toward the well-being that everybody wants. I have received my own experience of life from my loved ones, from whom I learned in a more direct way, and beyond the skill of my profession, my present surroundings, including the people and patients who have given me the opportunity of appreciating deeper fields within that evolving process toward a better well-being. Within the infinite amount of my experiences, including the ones that I have shared with my loved ones, during the studying and practicing of medicine and during my continuous encounter of challenges in my human experience, I have found deeper understanding in our evolving growth process that I am pleased to share with you in this book.

I have experienced the knowledge and practices of different cultures, from the simple ones to the most sophisticated; and in them, I have been able to integrate the equality, the difference, and the uniqueness of people as well as to understand in a more holistic way what society, humanity, and spirituality represent for each one of ourselves. Among those differences and equalities, I have been able to receive the deepest teachings, but similar in possibilities to the ones that exist in each and every one of us.

When I refer to personal experiences, I
