About this ebook

Subtle Energy Healing – Encouraging a Scientific Revolution discusses the healing and nonviolent nature of Subtle Energy. From Ancient times to the present, the story of Subtle Energy, sometimes called Chi by the Chinese, is developed through the eyes of meditators, scientists, and yoga enthusiasts.

In the modern era, Subtle Energy Healing focuses on Dr. Tiller’s experiments conducted in the 1990s. In these experiments, four meditators changed the pH of water using an energized intention. It is now widely believed that the force behind an energized intention is Subtle Energy. This experiment changed everything. But more incredibly, Dr. Tiller and his meditators were able to imprint their intention into an electronic device. When they sent the electronic device to colleagues 2000 miles away, and the device was turned on, the electronic device changed the pH of water without the meditators having to be present.

Medical professionals immediately saw the connection between pH, donor electrons in human cells, and energy healing. This connection is developed through the work of Dr. Tennant as well as Max Gerson, the founder of the Gerson Way, a healing modality which cures most forms of cancer.

The influence this new technology has had on alternative healthcare providers such as energy healers, traditional healers, and diet-based therapies since the 1990s has been phenomenal. In addition, many new Subtle Energy Devices have been developed. These devices have been a driving force in establishing this new technology creating new industries around the world.

The second quality, explored, is the nonviolent nature of Subtle Energy. Since the 1970s, many individuals have contributed research and insights into this idea. However, the primary recognition for the broadening of the nonviolent nature of Subtle Energy goes to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, founder of the Transcendental Meditation technique. His ideas are brought to light by illuminating mantra technology and group consciousness. The Maharishi was one of the first to discover a technological solution for world peace.

In the final chapter, all the insights discussed and modern Subtle Energy tools that have been developed are brought together into a modern social media program called the Pathway Program. The program uses all the modern Subtle Energy technologies to improve a person’s health and wealth, and contribute to the nonviolent nature of the community.

Writing Subtle Energy Healing is the result of a lifetime of longing to write it. In so many ways, the book wrote itself. It’s as if I had no say in the “matter”.You see, I lost both my parents before the age of twenty. I lost my father at the age of 12 to a heart attack and my mother to leukemia around my twentieth birthday. I believe my parent’s deaths drove my interests in healing and wellness the rest of my life. As a young man, I became obsessed with healing.Eventually, this obsession led me away from orthodox medical treatment for chronic disease to an approach that used Subtle Energy and detox as a healing modality. Also, on my quest to uncover everything I could about this healing energy, I uncovered other qualities. One of the other qualities discussed in the book is nonviolence and the role Subtle Energy may play in a technological solution to world peace.Through the eyes of scientists, meditators, and yoga enthusiasts, I tell the story of how the healing and nonviolence qualities of Subtle Energy influenced us in the past, as well as in the present, and future.I have been a TM meditator for over 40 years. I still attend Yoga classes regularly and maintain an almost organic vegetarian diet.I currently reside in Michigan with my wife of 38 years, Linda, and son, Joseph.

Chapter 1 – Subtle Energy and the Ages of Man

Today, as in ancient times, interest in subtle energy abounds. In the Indian tradition, subtle energy is called Prana, a vital force central to Vedic science. In China, it is called chi and is used in healing and other high arts. In Australia, the Aborigines believed it came from the Sun and flowed along special paths in the ground they called songlines. According to scholars, they would walk for hundreds of miles along these lines in rituals to energize them so that they could infuse the life force into their crops. There were similar traditions kept by the Druids in England, and there were the dragon lines in China. Flowing subtle energy is called mana by the Polynesians and orendo by the Iroquois. The Great Sioux Nation called this life-generating force wakonda, while in North Africa it was called Baraka. The ancient Greeks called it pneuma and believed it was related to the spirit or soul in a similar fashion as stated in Vedic texts.

It seems as if wherever belief in subtle energy existed, we find large megalithic sites. Hinting at a celestial source, these structures seem to have been built to control and channel this energy. In a similar way, the traditional healers in these cultures – Chinese doctors, Hindu yogis, Polynesian shamans, and Sioux medicine men – practiced controlling and balancing subtle energy for their patients (see Swanson video). Today, we understand subtle energy to be a technology, a tool to be studied and used to aid a healthier, more productive life. It has come to be thought of as the fifth force of nature, taking its place along with gravity, electromagnetism, and the weak and strong nuclear forces.

A historical perspective on subtle energy gives us a better understanding of the dynamics of this force of nature. This perspective shows the enormity of the wondrous effects this force has had on mankind over the millennia. Many scholars now agree that all ancient civilizations had knowledge of subtle energy. It is a part of their myths and folklore. When these myths are examined, many healing and spiritual benefits become apparent. However, the most insightful information concerning the nature of subtle energy is told in the great myths of the ages of man.

According to various cultural myths, the ages of man refer to the stages of human existence on Earth. Each of the ancient civilizations seems to have experienced these stages as various states of human awareness. The most glorified ages in history tend to accompany a presence of higher states of consciousness, while the bleaker ages reflect proportionally lower states of awareness. Throughout the ages of man, knowledge of subtle energy and a civilization’s ability to use it were facilitating factors. Remarkably, although these civilizations were separated both temporally and geographically, all assigned four distinct stages, referred to as the ages of man.

Historically, subtle energy theorists have questioned the facilitating nature of this primordial force. For example, why does it seem that subtle energy affected ancient people more than modern people? What causes subtle energy to wax and wane, creating these ages? What causes the increased density of subtle energy over long periods of time? What is the current state of subtle energy technology, and does it hint at human abilities beyond what we ever dreamed possible? Can subtle energy show us the furthest reaches of human potential? Does it validate alternative medicine? Will the current revival of subtle energy technology give us a sense of optimism, inspiring us to heal ourselves, our loved ones, our communities, and the world?

    Hamlet’s Mill

If knowledge of subtle energy is timeless, we should see its narrative played out in the cultural myths of the ancients. So, it is not surprising that references to subtle energy and its effect on human consciousness are found in over thirty ancient cultures, as documented by historians Giorgio de Santillana and Hertha von Dechend. Their enlightening work, Hamlet's Mill: An Essay of Myth and the Frame of Time describes in detail worldwide myths and folklore dealing with the ages of man and the effect that an invisible energy has had on human consciousness. Walter Cruttenden, author of the Lost Star, said that, When these highly respected scholars completed Hamlets Mill in 1969, the worlds of archaeology and anthropology were forever changed. The idea of higher ages existing in the past appears to be woven into most cultural traditions, giving credence to their effect on history.

In Hamlet’s Mill, Santillana and von Dechend demonstrate that awareness of subtle energy was not an isolated incident. For example, the Norse, Celtic, Lakota, and Persians are described in detail. The most developed, however, in addition to the Vedic Ages (called Yuga cycles), are the Greeks, Egyptians, Mayans, and Hopi.

Hamlet’s Mill proposes that, Our ancestors of the high and far-off times were endowed with minds wholly comparable to ours, and were capable of rational processes—always given the means at hand. Santillana and von Deschend go on to say that these ancient civilizations were particularly fascinated by astronomical observations and that they made many discoveries. One of the most important was the precession of the Earth’s axis, called the precession of the equinoxes. This is known as the circular shift in the Earth’s axis of rotation (see graphic above). A similar action is exhibited in the wobble of a spinning top. In the view of Santillana and von Dechend, precession was discovered long before the accepted date of the Greek discovery.

In addition, these civilizations believed that the world passed through cycles or ages of approximately 24,000 years based on this circular motion or precession. These myths also discuss other astronomical knowledge, enhancing belief in the ages of man, as well as the changes in human consciousness they induce. In another chapter, we will explore Walter Cruttenden’s idea that the precession is solar system based and not Earth centric. From his point of view, the solar system moves into and out of more or less dense subtle energy fields, causing changes in consciousness during the ages of man.

    The Golden Age of Greece

In the West, we are most familiar with the Greek traditions of the ages of man as being the Golden Age, Silver Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age. We know of these traditions through the writings of Hesiod and Plato. In his book In the Beginning: Some Greek Views on the Origins of Life and the Early State of Man, William Guthrie, a classical scholar and prolific author writing around 1957, describes the Greek Golden Age as:

Not wealth and luxury, but a sufficiency of natural food in conjunction with high moral character and complete absence of wars and dissension. Ease and happiness are linked to simplicity and innocence of mind…. Kronos in his wisdom appointed gods or spirits to take care of men.

Hesiod, a Greek poet, wrote about the Great Year, in which he describes, in detail, the various ages of man. He described the Golden Age as an age in which people lived simply but happily. There were no wars. No person fought over possessions, each having all that was needed. Land produced an abundance of food, and the climate was agreeable. It was a time considered blessed by the Gods, a near-perfect world. In the Golden Age, Hesiod said that mankind:

Lived like gods with a carefree heart, remote from toil and misery. Wretched old age did not affect them either, but with hands and feet ever unchanged they enjoy themselves in feasting, beyond all ills, and they died as if overcome by sleep. All good things were theirs, and the grain giving soil bore its fruit of its own accord in unstinted plenty, while they at leisure harvested their fields in contentment amid abundance.

Hesiod goes on to say that eventually the Golden Age would end and mankind would decline into the Silver Age, followed by the Bronze Age, then sink into the lowest age, the Iron Age, an age of war, terror, injustice, corruption, and an absence of spirituality. Hesiod wrote that he was saddened by the state of mankind in this age and warned us about the nature of men in this period. He wrote:

For now truly is a race of Iron, and men never rest from labour and sorrow by day, and from perishing by night; and the gods shall lay sore trouble upon them. Strength will be right and reverence will cease to be; and the wicked will hurt the worthy man, speaking false words against him, and will swear an oath upon them.

If this were the only example of the ages of man and the different states of consciousness each age brings, Hamlet’s Mill would never have been written. There are many more.

    Egyptians

According to John Major Jenkins, writing in Galactic Alignment, The arguments for Egyptian knowledge of precession of the equinox and the ages of man is now ubiquitous in the literature. Examples abound. R.A. Schwaller de Lubicz in his book Sacred Science: The King of Pharaonic Theocracy found evidence of the precession as well as evidence to suggest that the Egyptian’s cycle of ages was related to the alignment of our solar system to the center of our galaxy. He found, by studying their astrological symbols, that the Egyptians believed the last Golden Age occurred around 10,800 B.C. More exciting and telling than current scholars was the Egyptian priest named Manetho, writing around 300 B.C., who wrote a history of Egypt in Greek. Today, only fragments remain. But, from what is left of the manuscript, scholars have been able to decipher that Manetho was describing the progression of an age when gods ruled humanity, followed by a period of rule by demigods and heroes, then an age of rule by ordinary men. The sequence describes a progression of ascending and descending ages similar to the Greek mythology. Manetho describes the precessional observation of the constellation Orion to describe what he called the First and Last times. Scholars were able to backdate the first time to be approximately 10,800 B.C., when the precession cycle restarts, at the peak of the Golden Age.

Ancient Egyptians looked to past ages for higher knowledge and enlightenment. The stories in the literature about the First time and Last time contain strong similarities to the Greek’s Golden Age. There is little doubt that the Greek and Egyptian beliefs influenced each other. Many Greek philosophers did refer to older Egypt as the source of much of their wisdom. Other scholars state that the Greeks were philosophically independent from the Egyptians, even as both their histories describe a similar understanding of the Golden Age.

In The Lost Star, Walter Cruttenden adds to the discussion, writing:

Among the more striking impressions one gets from ancient Egyptian mythology about the First Time is how much like men the gods were. Ra, the god-man and first ruler of Egypt, was said to have created many of the great achievements of Egyptian civilization. Could it be that these early gods were not gods at all, but mortals from a more capable and enlightened time [caused by precession and the increased density of subtle energy as the solar system cycled closer to a massive subtle energy field at the center of the galaxy]? Or that some of them had god-like powers, similar to the stories of Krishna, Christ, or even Sai Baba in India today? They reportedly live long life spans, and ancient Egyptian kings’ lists give us a record of rulers going back many thousands of years to the time of Ra, a claim that our modern sensibilities easily dismiss as fanciful. After all, how old could the civilization have been? However, as ages rise and fall, with people living to great lengths in the higher ages as we find in the myths and traditions like Methuselah in the Bible, it might be wise to suspend judgment about the kings’ list in Egypt. Egypt was not alone in making these claims. At least a half-dozen Greek philosopher-scholars, including Herodotus and Sophocles, stated that civilization dates back well over 200,000 years.

In recent years, engineers like Robert Bauval in The Orion Mystery have been measuring monuments in Egypt in order to find out what the Egyptians were trying to accomplish with these great structures. More specifically, he worked extensively to measure and calculate the celestial alignments of the Giza complex. His hope was to discover a correlation between the alignments of the sphinx and great pyramids and the constellations of the night sky, and how these relationships tie into the myth of the First Time or the Golden Age. Remarkably, he discovered there was a time when the belt stars of Orion would have aligned neatly with the three great pyramids and the sphinx would face the constellation Leo, exactly as that constellation rose on the vernal equinox around 10,500 B.C.

In The Orion Mystery, Bauval hints that the chronology of Egyptian pyramid building lends credibility to the idea of previous higher ages. Bauval leads us to believe that, if we compare the techniques of the great pyramids of Giza with those built later, it is clear that not only did the pyramids get smaller, but over time they got worse at building them. Building techniques deteriorated, until finally the skill was lost.

The ages of man, as part of the primordial tradition, hints at a profound truth. Could subtle energies be the catalyst for the ages of man, one of which brings about an enlightened humanity, another terror, brutality, and ignorance? Could these traditions shine a bright light on the role subtle energy plays in this cosmic dance?

    Mayan Cosmology

The Mayan civilization reigned in Mesoamerica for over 3,000 years, first appearing around 1,800 B.C. and lasting until destroyed by the conquistadors. Like the Egyptians, the Mayan civilization was obsessive about the movement of the stars, the timing of the equinox, and galactic alignment. They recorded this knowledge in meticulous detail. These observations enabled them to develop a remarkable calendar, which used a series of different calendars, all running concurrently. They created a 360-day solar calendar with a five-day ceremonial period attached to the end, as well as a Long Cycle calendar that marked the passage of the great ages of man.

John Major Jenkins is perhaps the greatest authority on Mayan cosmology. He wrote an insightful book titled Galactic Alignment. Jenkins writes,

The Maya were interested in two parts of the sky and two precession-caused alignments that occur in those regions. Both alignments are extremely rare and involve the entire frame of the sky rather than merely local conjunctions of planets. The Maya created an entire set of myths and deities to encode these celestial convergences. The first alignment concerns the resurrection of One Hunahpu; the second describes the return of Quetzalcoatl. Astronomically speaking, Earth is aligning via the solstitial axis, with the Galactic Center and Galactic Anticenter. Metaphysically speaking, a galactic chakra system can be envisioned in this convergence, with the revolutionary energy (Shakti) [subtle energy] being funneled through Earth as a result of these alignments identified in ancient Mayan cosmology.

Jenkins is suggesting that the Mayan believed that their Long Calendar predicted a periodic alignment with the galactic center, that this alignment stimulates consciousness, and that the stimulation is caused by increasing subtle energy density. The Mayan world age doctrine is too similar to the Egyptian and Greek ages of man myths to be mere chance. Truly, the Mayans have engrained into their culture a part of the primordial tradition.

    Hopi Mysticism

Hopi legend is even more specific in its account of the ages of man. Author Frank Waters, himself a Hopi, speaks of the four worlds in his insightful work Book of the Hopi. He says,

In the first world people were pure, happy and healthy. The people felt one with another and with Nature. By the third world, people lived in big cities and there was corruption and war, and in the fourth world people lived in a hard world marked by duality – heat and cold, beauty and barrenness.

Following is an excerpt from a Hopi creation myth. Although only a snippet of a quote is given, the myth resembles very closely the Greek and Egyptian descriptions of the Iron Age.

"I have something more to say to you before I leave you, Sotuknang told the people as they stood at their place of emergence.

The name of the fourth world is Tuwaqachi, – the world Complete. You will find out why. It is not all beautiful and easy like the previous ones. It has height and depth, heat and cold, beauty and barrenness: it has everything for you to choose from. What you choose will determine if this time you can carry out the plan of creation on it, or whether it, in time, must destroy you too. "

In Frank Waters’ strange and wonderful book, thirty elders of the ancient Hopi tribe of northern Arizona reveal the Hopi worldview for the first time in written form. Although deeply steeped in Hopi mysticism, Waters clearly elucidates a time in the distant past when the Hopi experienced an expanded consciousness, which then descended into a world of suffering and ignorance.

I found this quote from a Hopi creation story:

They felt as one and understood each other without talking. It was the same with the birds and the animals. They all suckled at the breast of their mother Earth, who gave them milk of grass, seed, fruit, and corn, and they all felt as one: people and animals.

The Hopi, just as all humanity, descended into lower ages caused by diminishing subtle energy. Their paradise, their Garden of Eden, was lost. At the beginning of the Fourth World, Sotuknang, the creator, tells the Hopi, It is not all beautiful and easy like the previous ones.

The Hopi’s worldview taught a belief in long cycles of time and the coming and going of the ages of man. Their creation myths speak of advanced ages in the past, where men lived in harmony with each other and nature. With each subsequent descending age, their gods would destroy and rebuild the world. Each rebuild would foster a less peaceful age than the one before, only to begin anew, with the ending of human suffering and a new path toward a more enlightened future.

However, all is not lost. As with the
