    Chapter 1

Mary dabbed her brow, the heat was gradually wearing her down. And it wasn't like holiday heat, the sort of temperature experienced on a Spanish beach in the summer, heat that was easily remedied with coconut sun lotion and chilled cocktails. No, this was an oppressive African heat combined with close to one hundred percent humidity, there was no escape other than air conditioning, and it wasn't possible to live exclusively inside an artificially cooled cocoon, she had a household to run, she was a hands on type of woman, and despite being typically south of England suburban at heart, she was quite enjoying her change of surroundings, she wanted to know more about the local culture and people.

And I wonder if what they say about black men is correct? Friends back home had teased her, they had fed her stories of how the local men craved white women... and how they struggled to contain their massive cocks inside normal trousers... and they do say that's why the majority wear the flowing grand boubou robes, to disguise the monsters that lurk between her legs.

Mary had flushed and shaken her head, Such things don't interest me, I'm a happily married woman. Yet still massive black mambas had invaded her dreams before their relocation.

The move had been problematic to say the least, with endless delays, pedantic customs officers and ridiculous regulations. Clive, her husband of close to ten years, had been sent by the company to smooth the path as it were, to iron out the wrinkles before the real business could begin. Clive carried a huge responsibility on his shoulders, he had to negotiate terms with one of Africa's more unstable despots, a President reputed to be far more than just a couple of cans short of the proverbial six pack. Like the Atlantic ocean that rolled against the shores of his small country he could be calm and beneficent one moment, but at the first hint of clouds in his sky, those closest ran instantly for cover because his storms were legendary. His was a dictatorship, he answered to no man... and the vast reserves of crude oil beneath his rainforest and territorial waters ensured that his actions could be over looked and casually dismissed by security councils. He was a ticking time bomb, he was universally despised... but he was the civilized world's closest friend, as long as his refineries kept churning out precious fuel.

It's a political game, Clive had told her after a particularly trying day spent in the Ministry, He has the oil, we want it... so we have to play his game regardless of how ridiculous.

That's what I can't understand, Mary had said, So many others are already here, working, why is it so difficult for us?

Clive had smiled sympathetically, she didn't know the whole story. Because my love, the area we want to drill is virgin. It hasn't been touched before... so they are treating us like we're the first to arrive... they're screwing us for the best deal possible.

Mary didn't understand the mechanics of the negotiations, but she wasn't blind, she knew human nature, and she didn't see the visit from immigration officials
