    CHAPTER 1

    THE SHOCK

It was February 3, 1957 the air was cold but the sun was shinning. As I walked down Park Ave. in New York City I wondered what it would be like to be somewhere in a place where the sun shines daily and the brisk weather is only something you read about. My name is Jack Wilson. I am thirty two years old born in New York, up state near Buffalo. I come from a family of middle class hard working people. My dad worked for the city in Buffalo as a city electrician where he had the responsibility to keep the traffic lights in operation as well as installing new street lights when needed. He retired about twenty years earlier. He passed away with a major stroke in 1950 at the age of eighty. My mother, Joyce Wilson, didn’t work and most of the family on both her and dad’s side were living in Manhattan, New York. Mom sold the house in Buffalo and she and I moved to an apartment on Park Avenue. Mom was getting up in age and it was very difficult for her to get around on her own. I was able to get a job working in this small watch repair shop with a nice little man by the name of Pete Amaddo.

One day Pete said to me, Jack, if you learn this trade, someday this shop could be yours. Pete was all alone as his wife passed away two years earlier and his sons moved out of New York. He told me that he didn’t want to see the state get all of his assets. I worked for Pete for about two and one half years when one day he became very ill. Pete had his lawyer draw up his will and he willed the shop and all of his assets to my mother and myself as he was very close to my mother. Pete never came out of the hospital. He passed away in August of 1956. Pete died of leukemia.

Mother and I gave him a good funeral as he didn’t have any family in New York to do this. It was a very small funeral with just some of his clients and friends attending.

Mom and I had to get Pete’s lawyer and have the will read and make sure everything was legal. Mom had to sign the ownership papers for the store which now placed everything in her name and she made me the co-beneficiary in case anything would happen to her. This was all new to me but I knew it had to be dealt with. We didn’t make too many changes to the shop. Mom just made it look like a person is welcome when they walk in the door.

I have an older brother Dave, who graduated from Texas A&M, and then he decided to find a job and stay in Texas. He has worked at three different types of employment. He now has a good job working in the jewelry business.

As I approached my watch repair shop I saw a sign on the billboard that showed flights to Dallas, Texas; Miami, Florida and San Diego, California. Well I could only dream at this time as I had too many ties here in New York.

As the day went on I repaired and sold watches and clocks. A lady came in about 11:30am and asked me to fix her wrist watch. When she showed it to me, I guess through my expression, I must have looked shocked. The face of the watch was made from an emerald stone and had cut diamonds at the fifteen minute increments. This watch must have been worth $2000 or more. She said is there a problem? I said Uh NO! I just haven’t seen anything like this before. She said It kept loosing about five minutes every week and I was tired of resetting it. I will check it out and I should have an answer for you in about two hours. She said that will be about 1:30 or 2:00 p.m. right? I’ll be back then.

I completed some other work and then I began to open this wrist watch, as I removed the back of it I heard someone coming in the front door. I was all alone in the shop as I didn’t make enough money to hire permanent help. I did have a school boy help me clean up from time to time but this was not his day to work. I stepped out into the sales area and there were two men standing there with masks over their faces and guns in their hands. One of them motioned for me to lie down on the floor, neither of them spoke.

One of them went back into the work shop and the other one stayed with me in the main part of the store with his gun pointing at the back of my head. I told them Please don’t rob me, this is all I have and I am supporting my very ill mother. The guy pushed the gun hard to my neck as if to say, shut-up. They took a lot of watches and money, about $500 I had in the back room. Then they left without saying a word. My store had a small area between the inner and outer door, like a foyer in a home, when these two men were in that area they removed their masks and proceeded outdoors. I didn’t see their faces.

I ran to the telephone and called the police, they were there within minutes. I could only tell them what I saw. I thought one walked with a right leg limp. I figured they were about six foot and 200 lbs. to 220 lbs. The police immediately put out an all points bulletin.

When we started to take inventory of what had been stolen, I immediately shouted Oh My God, The officer standing next to me jumped and said What the hell is wrong? I said, They took a wrist watch that was brought in here by a lady this morning, I valued it somewhere around $2000. The lady is coming back around 2:00 p.m. to check on it. The officer asked for her name and how could he get in touch with her. I said, she didn’t leave her phone number or address, but her name is Sandy she didn’t leave her last name. By this time it was 1:30 p.m. so the police said they would stay and talk to her when she showed up.

At 2:05 p.m. Sandy came in and when she saw all the police in the store she asked, What is happening here? Why are the police here? I told her what had happened and she let out a scream that shattered the front window on my store. The police tried to calm her down then she jumped on me and began biting my nose and ear and calling me names. She even drove her knee in my groin and I went down. The police pulled her off of me and handcuffed her to quiet her down.

Little did I know she was the daughter of a very rich man in Dallas, Texas.
