    1.   The children’s friend

Jesus is the friend of children,

He delights to see them play,

Loves to watch them in the green fields,

With the clover and the hay.

Likes to see them picking flowers,

    Buttercups and daisies too,

‘Specially when they say all smiling,

These, dear Mother, are for you.

When beside the sea in summer,

    Underneath a sky of blue

    And enjoying happy hours,

Make sure Jesus is there too.

How he loves to see you happy,

Oh! How he enjoys good fun,

And if you should ask his blessing,

    He will bless you, everyone.

But if you should have some trouble,

    Making brightest days seem dull,

Tell Friend Jesus all about it,

And he’ll see that all is well.

    So, whatever comes, dear children,

Be it joy and sorrow too,

Jesus sees it from his Heaven,

    And is looking after you.

Jesus is the friend of children,

He delights to hear them pray,

Loves them singing songs of gladness,

To our Father day by day.

    2.   The sun goes down with a golden crown

The sun goes down with a golden crown,

As it slides right out of sight,

The flowers and trees and the birds and bees,

    Slip away, into the night.

Then all around, is a quiet sound,

As the earth lays down to rest,

The Lark nestles down quite close to the ground,

With its head upon it’s breast.

Lord we shall be deep in silent sleep,

    In our cosy little beds,

So we pray your angels, their watch to keep

Quite close to our sleepy heads.

Then in the morn, when the sun reborn,

And we are once more awake,

Stay with your children through sunshine and storm

And teach us your way to take.

Keep us Dear Lord, in the Christian way,

That will lead us to your home,

Where we’ll sing with the angels hymns of praise,

And never more wish to roam.

    08.09.1970

    3.   For all the world he came

Black or white, or red or yellow,

    Any colour of the skin,

Male or female, girl or fellow,

All are just alike to him,

For it is the soul he studies,

    Spirits given by God above,

Giv’n to tell the wondrous story,

    Of a great redeemer’s love.

    Shall we then, forsaking others,

    Cleave we only unto him,

    Shall we march along together,

    Through the valley City,

Where our ransom has been paid?

Paid by one who went before us,

    Paid upon a cruel tree,

Paid in blood and pain and service,

All for love of you and me.

When we pass beyond the shadows,

There our bodies will be changed,

    And our souls become untangled,

    From these sinful earthly frames.

Thus dear brother, we shall see him,

AS he is our Lord and King,

    And we’ll worship him forever,

Praise and Glory to him sing,

    Praise and Glory, Hallelujah!

    Praise the omnipotent King,

Praise our Lord who came from Heaven

    And did FULL SALVATION BRING.

    1970

    4.   I.H.S. Jesus Honinem Salvator

    I.H.S. Is in his service,

    Jesus Saviour of mankind,

We thy children humbly ask thee,

To enfold our lives with thine.

    Jesus Saviour, how he suffered,

    Hanging there upon the tree,

All because he loves us children,

And our ransom died to be.

In his service we would follow,

    Follow ever in the say,

Trusting for our strength to Battle,

From our Jesus day by day.

    Jesus Saviour, we go forward,

Soldiers of thy cross to be,

Minutes, hours and days we’re spending,

    Leaning ever upon thee.

Bless us soldiers, saviour bless us,

Let us set the world on fire,

With a yearning to be like thee,

Fill all hearts with great desire.

Well done good and faithful servant,

This they words shall be to us,

We are Saviour in thy service,

Bless our club and strengthen us.

    1948

    5.   Wonderful Jesus

O Jesus, my Jesus, O wonderful Jesus,

You came from your home and your Father above,

To tell me, to tell me, that marvellous story,

The story of God and his infinite love.

O Jesus you told me in Pain and in Pleasure,

On Calvary’s Cross and by Galilee’s sea,

You told me in stories of love beyond measure,

The depth of your dear Father’s longing for me.

But Oh! I can see by your life, I am nothing,

The chief of all sinners it seems I must be,

Yet still I can hear your sweet voice is appealing,

IT’s saying, oh sinner, Please come unto me.

Your arms are outstretched and I see you are smiling,

That welcoming smile that disperses all fear,

While down in the depths of my soul there is singing,

There’s singing because I can tell you are near.

Oh! Wonderful Jesus, Oh! Jesus my Saviour,

Teach me all my days to be faithful and true,

And then when at long last my life’s work is over,

Bring me to our Father, to Heaven and You.

    1935

To the tune by H. Novak

    6.   Keep your eyes upon Jesus

Keep your eyes upon the Saviour, as you pass on through this life,

For you need his Holy smile, in the trouble and the strife,

When the waves of life are tossing and your load you cannot bear,

Keep your eyes upon the Saviour and you’ll find your comfort there.

Keep your eyes upon the Savour, when you’re friendless and alone,

For you need his friendly smile, to give strength unto your own,

When your kind deeds are forgotten by the people everywhere,

Keep your eyes upon the Saviour, and you’ll find your thank you there.

Keep your eyes upon the Saviour, when you’re doubtful of the way,

For you need his loving smile in the perils of each day,

And you can be sure he’ll lead you in the way that you should go,

Keep your eyes upon the Saviour and the heavenward way you’ll know.

Keep your eyes upon the Saviour, and be happy all the while,

For you need his welcome smile to assist you o’er each mile,

When you have your hand held close in his, from morn to end of day,

And your eyes upon the Saviour, he will keep you all the way.

    19.06.1956

    7.   A pilgrim’s prayer

O Lord, forgive me, if I have this day,

Forsaken thee in any kind of way,

For all those things I have or have not done,

And thus have caused pain to anyone.

Some message Lord, that I should take for thee,

To some poor friend who thus might happier be,

Some word of love, some little deed of grace,

That through my act might show my Saviour’s face.

Although my spirit waits with willingness,

To do thy great command or least request,

My body is so weak and full of fear,

That I forget to say, the Lord is near.

O speak dear Lord, with patient tones and clear,

Teach me to trust thy power ever near,

Lead by the hand as Mother leads her child,

Teach me to be thy servant, meek and mild.

So shall I live my days, so close to thee,

That all they love and truth, shine out in me,

And this poor human heart by calvary cleansed,

May win Well done belov’d the great Amen.

    8.   One in ten

Ten little men whom Jesus healed,

Wandered away o’er lane and field,

Never a thought of turning back,

To thank the healer for his act.

These who were lepers now were clean,

Far different men than they had been,

One of them felt a conscience dart,

That wounded him through, to the heart.

His conscience burned within him now,

And bade him back, to Jesus bow,

    His grateful heart did overwhelm,

    With gratitude for healing balm.

    Then turning
