HOMEWARD BOUND
It was a long twenty years ago, when Bill Anderson was sent to prison for murder and robbery. He was finally walking out of his cell for the last time. Bill had been an upright prisoner, so he was let out early. As Bill was leaving his cellblock one of the guards yelled out to him,
You take care of yourself Bill, and don’t forget to put to good use the things you have learned while being in here,
Harry said.
I won’t Harry. Thanks for all you did for me; it made the last twenty years go by faster,
Bill said.
Your welcome Bill. By the way are you going back to the mountain?
Harry Said.
Yes I am, for my wife will be waiting for me, she got out a couple of years ago on good behavior,
Bill said.
That’s fine; I wish you both the best Bill.
Thank you Harry, we will need it, for we are going to find out who killed Dan Crump. If you ever have a chance to come up on the mountain Harry look me up,
Bill said.
I will Bill so long,
said. Harry.
As Bill went out the gate of the prison, he noticed that the bus was waiting for him. The door opened as Bill got near.
Where are you going Mister?
the bus driver said.
Up North, take me as far as you go and I’ll decide later when I want to get out,
Bill told him.
Ok with me, this bus is going as far a Lake Placid,
The bus driver said.
Good that seems like a good place to start,
Bill said. Bill had decided to tell him that, for he did not want him to know where he was from. As he headed north, he realized that he was a stranger with all the changes that had happened on the way. As he got closer to home his mind went back to the time he was in his large living room sitting near the window looking out over the lake and mountain. It was happy times there with his wife and children. After he was sent up his daughter had wrote but his son never tried for he could not forgive his father because he could not forgive him for what he did. He had blamed him for what he had done to his mother, what he didn’t know was that we were in it together. It was not long when the bus made its last stop in Lake Placid.
Bill said. goodbye to the bus driver. As Bill was walking from the bus, the bus driver said, Take care of yourself, stop at the diner across the street, and have a meal on the bus line. Just tell the clerk that I said.so.
Thank you I will,
replied Bill.
As Bill walked into the diner, he noticed that the booth way at the end was empty. As he went by the waiter Bill told her the bus driver sent him in.
She told him, fine, and said. take any seat, I’ll be right with you,
Bill sat at the booth he had noticed when he walked in. As he was resting, the waiter came.
What can I do for you this morning?
I’ll have the Daily special and coffee,
Bill replied
Very good
she said.
Bill was drinking his coffee when all of a sudden Charles Drake from the F.B.I. came through the door. As he looked around, he noticed Bill and headed straight towards him.
Well if I don’t believe
Charles said.
Sit down Charles,
Bill said with a surprised voice.
When did you get out Bill?
replied Charles
Yesterday, Charles, where is your partner, Sam?
Bill answered.
He passed away a couple of years ago, and I’m working out here now. Are you heading back to town? Your wife is living in the same place, I see her now and then
Charles said.
Yes I’m going home right as soon as I leave here,
Bill said.
I’m going that way Bill if you want to ride with me?
Charles said.
Well sure Charles, I will be glad to, you can tell me all the changes on the way.
Bill replied.
HOME TO STAY
It was not long when Bill could see the mountain that he longed to see again.
Charles any changes going on in town?
Bill said
Yes Bill, Frank Bolster retired and living in one of Carl Benson’s cabin on the lake. Carl still owns half of the town. He has been a model citizen since he got out,
Charles said.
How’s my wife?
Bill asked.
She is fine I see her now and then, she misses you a lot since she got home,
Charles replied.
Well I know what that is like,
Bill said.
What are you going to do now Bill?
Asked Charles
"I don’t know right now. I am going to just enjoy being home with Ann for a while.
Well here we are, and it looks as if Ann is working in the living room. She will see you get out of the car, it won’t be a surprise,
Charles said.
I don’t care Charles I’m home, and here to stay,
Bill said.
I’ll see you in a couple of days Bill,
Charles said.
Thanks for the ride, yes please stop when you go by the next time,
Bill said.
As Bill got out of the car, and started towards the house, Ann came running out, right into Bill’s arms. "Darling what are
