CHAPTER ONE
Breed Anderson tossed his saddlebags over his horse, tightened the cinch, and ignored the looks from people as they passed him by. He hated towns and just wanted to leave Orange Creek behind. He was more at home working on a ranch, or roaming wide-open spaces.
From the time he was a child; he learned he was different. Life had dealt him a raw deal, his mother dying before he was five years old. He leaned his head against the saddle and remembered that day with such clarity. He could still hear his mother gasping for breath as she pulled him towards the children’s home. He remembered his mother falling to her knees as she knocked on the door. Her last words to him as the door opened, The white world is where you belong. Promise me you will live in the white man’s world.
Breed inhaled a sharp breath. He lived as she requested despite the fact that he received several beatings for being a half-breed. He’d learned to fight at an early age, and to this day, he didn’t feel he belonged anywhere.
He straightened up and was ready to put his foot in the stirrup when someone bumped into him from behind. He whipped around, gun drawn, to see a woman sprawled out on the ground.
I’m sorry,
she said. I wasn’t watching where I was going.
Breed holstered his gun and leaned down and helped her up. Are you hurt?
Just my dignity,
she laughed.
Breed grinned. She was pretty. Her thick, curly black hair was coming undone from the pins holding it up, her emerald eyes sparkled in the sun, and her tempting cupid’s bow mouth made him wish he could taste her sweet lips. Someone chasing you?
Oh,
she turned and looked around. No, I was just in a hurry.
Where you headed to?
I’m trying to find someone to take me to my Aunt Ellie’s place. Aunt Ellie passed away a year ago and my father six months ago. I sold our home in Boston and decided to move out here and start all over.
Where’s the place located? I might be going out that way.
Really? You mean you’d take me? I can pay you.
Breed noticed the hopeful look on her face and how she glanced behind her every so often. He was about to ask where her stuff was, when a trapper came up behind her and grabbed her arm.
There you are, darlin’. Didn’t think you could get away form me that easily, did you?
Let go of me!
Breed stepped beside the woman. The lady said to let her go. You best be doing as she asked.
And who’s gonna make me?
I will. Now let go of her and leave her alone.
Some trappers were a mangy lot, unwashed, unkempt, and just plain vile. From the man’s smell he hadn’t had a bath in a long time. His beard hung to his chest, black and white hair mixed together along with dried food trapped inside his whiskers.
The trapper shook his head. I told her I’d take her to her Aunt’s house in exchange for something else. She lit out of the General Store like a fire was set under her. Guess she better learn she’s not back in Boston anymore. Out here, a woman needs a man to look after her.
The lady just hired me to take her and paid me for it, so let her go and get on about your business.
A two bit half-breed injun?
Breed clenched his teeth. Get your hands off her.
Why sure injun. I’ll let her go, so I can whoop your arse!
Breed was ready to fight when the Marshall shoved his way up to them.
What’s going on here?
Seems this injun don’t know when to leave a lady alone, Marshall.
Is that true, Miss?
"My name’s Beth Norenson. No, it isn’t true. This man has been bothering me and won’t leave me
