    PREFACE

We don’t understand much about life on this earth. Not, that is, from an Eternal or spiritual perspective. We are so caught up in living, that we don’t understand that most of the earthly things we do really don’t go toward our Eternal progression. Decisions made between colors of shirts, or brand name juices are purely earth-bound choices. They have no spiritual impact upon us, or the Eternities. But, we chase after false gods and set our hearts upon idols and the riches of the world. We want faster cars, palatial homes, and more and more things, things which we’re going to leave behind us at our passing. We are forever seeking that illusive state called ‘Happiness’, in the world.

Where is the joy in life? I have asked when beset by yet another trial, not realizing that joy is an Eternal blessing, not a life’s matter.

Man is, that he might have joy quote the scriptures. I used to think this quote meant that I should be joyful everyday about every thing. I still didn’t comprehend the principle of true joy.

God wants us to be a happy people. We are told from the pulpit. Now, that we can understand. He wants us to remember who we are and be happy to be having this experience that will take us to Eternal Life. Once we finally grasp this concept, it leads us along a road where we can pursue Eternal Joy. We are beginning to get the bigger picture of this Eternal being, who we are, and what our true purpose is.

Surely all of us have moments of sudden, fulfilling joy. The Spirit speaks to us and we feel the burning in our bosom that speaks of truth and Eternal light. We have times of great contentment, and seasons of happiness. The problem seems to lie in remembering that we are Eternal, and settling into the times and seasons of well-being.

We can. But, we have to be willing to give ourselves over to God through faith in our Redeemer, Jesus Christ.

Now, this does not mean that we move into a convent or monastery. It also does not mean that we quit living our daily lives. What it does mean is that we adjust our focus, remembering our heavenly heritage. We need to know what is really important in this mortal experience and align our lives to those things.

During the time in the Book of Mormon, when Alma had believed on the words of Abinadi, and had hidden himself in the forest, he was administered to by emissaries of the Lord according to his faith in Jesus Christ whom he had never seen nor heard. He became mighty in the works of righteousness and led away a goodly number of King Noah’s people unto salvation.

Throughout the history of mankind, in the Bible and in other holy works, we find similar situations wherein a prophet and/or seer is lifted up among a wicked people by the words of the Lord. They believe. And they are given the gift of being able to lead others into faith, hope and charity, the pure love of Christ.

There are as many things in our modern day life that can lead us astray as there were in the ancient days. I don’t think there are more things, they are just presented to us differently. Satan also has his angels, those of darkness and mischief. While not having bodies themselves, Satan’s legions may temporarily possess those who do have bodies. With these forms, they will tempt and persuade mankind to a multitude of errors. Satan has always known what things to do to lure away the hearts of men, in any age and time of their existence. We are blinded to the truth by the exciting things we may have and do. We can occupy our time with a variety of interesting and involved hobbies, games and sports. We can preoccupy our lives with toys of all sizes and projects that take a great deal of planning and intricate performances. These things can be very fulfilling and beautiful and have great meaning for ourselves and our families. They bring us comfort and a sense of personal accomplishment and earthly joy. But, they are still just things of the world and will not bring everlasting joy.

Our focus, therefore, should be upon those things that will bring us everlasting joy, because we are Eternal, not merely mortal.

We are passing through this world, as it were, not becoming a part of the world. It is not that we should give up entirely pleasing pastimes which edify our mortality, but that those pastimes should not be our focus. We are Eternal, not Worldly. We should focus on the things of the spirit. Spirituality is who we are. They are as close to us as our next breath of air.

In Moroni, Chapter 7, we read:

.. .search diligently in the light of Christ that ye may know good from evil; and if ye will lay hold upon every good thing, and condemn it not ye certainly will be a child of Christ…And in Christ there should come every good thing.(Moroni 7: 19, 22)

We are here to learn who we are by being exposed to who we are not. We are here to receive the Light of Truth into the unused portions of our minds that we may expand in spiritual knowledge and rise in the growth of our souls. We are here to magnify our existence by applying the Light of Truth over the evil, dark forces of the world.

It is often difficult as we live in this world, to discern what is really important. We get so side tracked with the things of the world. While not being of worldly origin ourselves, we must manage our

mortality in the world. It is much easier if we can remain balanced and in harmony with the Holy Spirit of God.

Of course, being comfortable, content and happy IS important to our all-around well-being, while we are here, and it is within our grasp. We are told by God to enjoy the good things on the earth. But first, let us seek the Kingdom of God by our faith upon the Savior, Jesus Christ. Let us keep all Light and Truth balanced with all Experience and Knowledge. Let us put first what is really important.

    -1-

FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST The Power of God

Faith, for my purposes in this book, is not the portrait of the church with which we are affiliated, nor how we believe, but that we do believe in God. Our lives are constantly being uplifted and inspired by people of all faiths, as to religions, and walks of life. It is our total devotion to God and His Son, Jesus Christ that is the faith I am talking of here, in all of its varied levels. It is hope of things we do not know because of sight or other senses, but that we perceive and understand from the depths of our minds, hearts and souls. It is trust because of who we are, where we came from and where we are bound to go. We are, after all, God’s children; Eternal beings

sojourning on this earth He created for us to gain strength, wisdom, and experience.

In the book Standing For Something, by Gordon B. Hinckley¹, he says that faith is our only hope. It is a working concept wherein we plead with our Heavenly Father for his guidance then work hard ourselves to bring the event to come to pass. Works are not brought about by grace alone, but by faith and our ability to apply all our knowledge and strength to bring about every good thing. Truly all of life is predicated upon the fact that through faith, God will ever assist us in our righteous, or good desires.

Faith precludes all else in life and in doctrine as we accept Christ and strive to obey God. He then can open the gates of the heavens to pour upon us richness and blessings through the agents and messengers assigned to our mortal probation. And we will then find the joy that has been promised to us through the ages. Not the joy of the world, but Eternal Joy that will go before us into that world of which we have forgotten.

As I have traveled around the country, away from home and familiarity, I have been able to be who I am, a daughter of God. I always travel with my scriptures and try to mingle with the Saints wherever I roam. It’s not always easy, and for those of you who have been in the military, some of my business trips have been similar to the worldly experiences you have endured within your tours of duty. But, I determined some years ago to remain steadfast. I know to whom I belong and I want always to be worthy to walk in the light of Jesus Christ. On one such trip I was surprised and delighted to find that I had indeed been a standard of light to a young lady who needed desperately to know what to do. She never said anything to me at the time of her plight, but followed an example that she saw and did what was right.

When she divulged her thankfulness to me, I was reminded of a great lesson I had internalized long ago. I AM a daughter of God. Being out in the world provided me with renewed insight. I contemplated such deep thoughts as; How may we ever know peace? And How, in this frightening world of rampant sin, may we make knowledgeable judgments of good and evil, right and wrong?

And, How can we ever make a difference? As I thought about the example I had unwittingly set for a girl I barely knew, I was flooded with the warmth and peace of mind that comes from the whisperings of the Holy Spirit. It is as simple as exercising my faith in Jesus Christ, remembering who I am, and doing what I am supposed to be doing, regardless of what the rest of the world is doing. We are, and I am a light unto the world. What a humbling and comforting thought!

It hasn’t happened all at once. As I have opened new doors of disregarded moments in my life, I have been prompted to clear unfinished business. That is, to accept old sins, repent of them and do what I am able to do in order to make it right. There have been times when years have gone by before I have embraced responsibility for a past situation and have asked forgiveness from someone I fear I have wronged. For myself, there have been no horrendous deeds to others that have had need of repair, but slights and simple violations for which I have been able to seek forgiveness in humility. All individuals are on varying levels of spiritual progression or digression. It is to be hoped though, that our trend is upward.

God knows us and knows what is best for us. We may rail at Him and plead with Him for what we think we want, but he is, after all, going to grant us exactly what we need. It is up to each of us to search diligently so as to have the light of Christ within ourselves and apply the principles we learn so that we may eventually see too, what is the better part.

There is a song by Michael McLean, entitled What I Need² that expresses this so well:

All I ever wanted, all I ever dreamed of,

    Everything I hoped, and all the things I prayed for;

Couldn’t hold a candle to what I’ve been given.

I’ve been given what I need.

A mansion on a hill, love like in the movies,

Perfect little lives, where no one has
