Chapter 1

Jenna couldn’t believe her eyes. It couldn’t be! But damn, it was. Her fiancé. And her best friend. In bed together. In HER bed. What the hell?

Before she could stop herself she spoke. What the hell are you doing? Jarred and Mandy didn’t even hear her the first time she asked the question. So she almost shouted it. What the hell are you doing?

Finally, they looked up and Jarred’s face turned a bright red. It’s not what you think it is, Jenna, he whispered.

Oh yeah she sputtered.

Jenna, really, it means nothing.

Well, it might mean nothing to you but it sure as hell means a lot to me, was all she said as she moved towards her closet. She grabbed her set of luggage and dragged it out. Within minutes she had filled all three of the cases and was ready to leave.

Jenna, please, let me explain. Jarred tried to get her to listen.

Don’t talk to me. Not now. Not ever. There’s no way you could say anything that would make me believe this means nothing. Get the hell out of my way and don’t come near me was all Jenna said as she continued to throw clothes into her suitcases.

Within ten minutes Jenna had filled her suitcases to overflowing and headed for the door.

Enjoy your life Jenna said as she turned and marched out of the bedroom and out of Jarred’s life.

She quickly loaded her suitcases into her car and gunned the motor. She had to get the hell out of there…and fast. Her wheels spewed gravel as she peeled out of the driveway, heading she didn’t know where.

Her eyes brimming with tears and her heart breaking, Jenna drove around Garden Grove for hours, trying to figure out what to do with her life. One thing was for sure, she was not staying in this God-forsaken town. But where to go? What to do?

Meantime her cell phone kept ringing. Each call was from Jarred and she refused to answer. Finally, she turned off the phone so she wouldn’t have to listen to it ringing any more.

Around six o’clock, Jenna realized that she hadn’t eaten all day and needed to put some food in her body. She drove to the nearest pizza joint. After all, pizza was one of the best comfort foods you could get, wasn’t it? Once she ordered her pizza, Hawaiian with mushrooms, she finally began to focus and realize that she needed a plan.

So what could she do? She decided that she needed a whole new life. She needed to get away from small-town living and go somewhere completely new. Jenna had always wanted to move to San Francisco but had never had the courage. Besides, she and Jarred had gotten engaged right out of college so she had been committed to that relationship and he wanted no part of the big city.

Well, I don’t have to think of him now, she decided. I can do anything I damn well want. Jenna was surprised to find herself swearing. She had never made a habit of doing so and was a bit shocked that the words seemed to come so easily to her thoughts. Amazing what such a shocking experience could do to a person.

Okay, so she’d go to San Francisco. But what the hell would she do there? She was so green, having always lived in a small town and coming from a lonely childhood. She didn’t know how she would make her way but she was determined that she would.

With at least one decision made she realized that she didn’t really have to decide tonight what she would do once she got there. That would come in its own good time. Feeling a bit better she realized that she really was hungry and she was even able to enjoy a couple of pieces of her pizza when the waiter brought it to her.

After sating her physical appetite she decided that she would drive to Sacramento and stay there for the night. Then she’d drive on to San Francisco tomorrow. After all, Sacramento was only an hour’s drive, so she would get there reasonably early.

Out on the highway Jenna allowed her mind to wander back to her earlier days and she began to see signs that Jarred was not as in love with her as he had always pretended to be. So many things he had done in the past now took on a whole new meaning and she realized that there had been telltale signs that she had chosen to ignore.

The many late nights of overtime, the times he had closed his computer down when she came in the office and a dozen other small things that she had not seen as red flags. But most of all he had kept putting off their wedding. Oh, there was always some good excuse, but they had been living together for four years now and it was long past time he committed.

Oh well, she could beat herself up forever over this whole thing but that wasn’t going to help, so she made a commitment to love herself rather than blame herself. That wouldn’t be easy, but Jenna knew she needed to take care of herself while she recovered from the shock.

Jenna also decided that she was going to have fun once she got to San Francisco. She had only ever been with Jarred and that hadn’t been exactly a thrilling experience. Jarred was really conservative and only ever wanted to have sex in the dark. He would climb on, thrust a few times, climax and climb off.
