    About the Author

Sometimes Sex Is the Best Therapy

Misty Hayden was a nurturer. Her caring nature appeared early on when, as a little girl, she was always tending to other children when they hurt themselves playing. Before a parent or adult could arrive, she had already quelled the crying with her genuine concern, plus a kiss on the spot to make it better. This love extended to animals and plants, too. She quickly took charge of her mom’s houseplants, and dressed the family kitty in an array of bandages, pretending it was in need of care.

As a pre-teen, she always kept antiseptic and band-aids in her purse, just in case someone had an accident. She also was a great listener when someone was sad or angry. Misty had a gift for being able to spot a person having a bad day. She always made a point of going up to them to see how they were doing. Almost always, she found a way to make them smile or lighten them up in some way.

Her gift became a bit more difficult in junior high school when she became interested in boys. Both of her choices for boyfriends during that period of her life took advantage of her giving nature and generosity. The second one was her first sexual experience. It really wasn’t an event to remember. He worked on her for months trying to get into her panties. When she finally gave in, he was rough, awkward, and came in less than 30 seconds. What’s more, he didn’t even hold her afterward. She was very disappointed and refused to repeat the experience with him. Consequently, he dumped her soon after, making her feel even worse.

In high school, she found a boy that was very much like herself. Things went well from the start. He was also very appreciative of the fact that she was willing to have sex. The experience with him was much better, but both in and out of the bedroom, they were competing to nurture each other. It was like relationships where a power struggle occurs, but in this case, a giving struggle. Call it Santa Clause Syndrome if you will, but it wasn’t working, and was doomed to failure. She did try for a while to just let him wait on her, hand and foot, but she then felt guilty for the imbalance. Soon it all became too much. So she broke up with him, making him cry, which in turn was equally hard on her, and afterwards she let the boy thing go for a while and focused her attention on school.

By the 10th grade, she was trying to decide on a career. Being a doctor or nurse had its appeal, as did becoming a vet, but then one day she picked up a book on the agony of mental disorders and childhood traumas. It changed her life. Immediately she knew that helping people heal their hearts and minds was for her.

The last two years of high school she studied all the books she could find on the human condition. She learned to observe and correctly diagnose her classmates, without them being aware. This knowledge, coupled with her uncanny intuition, made her very popular as a sounding board for troubled youth. Friends, classmates, and strangers confided in her. It is how she met her last boyfriend of high school. His name was Jonathan, and he was never able to sit still. His mind raced constantly so it was hard for him to hold a conversation. After a short time she taught him breathing techniques and how to focus himself. She used a form of hypnosis on him that worked to help him gain control of his thought stream. He became a peach of a guy, and they had a very nice relationship until after graduation.

That’s when he joined the Navy without even discussing it with her. The next thing she knew he was on his way to boot camp in San Diego, California. She loved him deeply, so with a good deal of last minute effort, she changed her enrollment from the University of Virginia to San Diego State. They reunited for a few months until he deployed with his ship across the Pacific. They wrote each other constantly for a while, but then he became distant. She suspected something was wrong. Finally, in his last letter, he told her he had met a girl in Hong Kong and they planned to marry as soon as he could immigrate her to the states.

Heartbroken and angry, she waited anxiously for her spring break to get herself righteous, and scrape the memory of him off her shoe. Acapulco was
