Introduction
Johannesburg, the City of Gold, has a rich history stretching back to the discovery of gold on the farm Lang Laagte. When George Harrison in February 1886 made the discovery, it set the stage for the gold capital of South Africa. When nine farms on 8 September 1886 were declared public digging areas, it sparked a mass influx of people to the area. All hoped to strike it large with gold mining. The digging area started from the farm Driefontein in the east to Roodepoort in the west. A town sprang up around the mining sites to support the miners, and Johannesburg was formed. At the time the area was only a settlement, and was named after two land surveying officials of the then Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR). The men were Christiaan Johannes Joubert and Johannes Rissik. The name Johannes they shared was used and ‘burg’ was added, forming Johannesburg. Some say burg means fortified city, but the Afrikaans name for the city is Johannesberg. Berg is the Afrikaans name for mountain. Thus it is Johannes Mountain.
Although there are numerous attractions in and around the city to see. This book focusses on historical as well as architectural important attractions. A number of additional attractions are included that will give visitors an African experience as close as possible to being in the bushveld, while being reasonably close to Johannesburg. A mixture of museums, parks and hiking attractions have been added to round the experience off.
Some of the important attractions include Constitution Hill that is the highest court in South Africa and an old prison where Mr Nelson Mandela was kept, Lilies leaf farm where Mr. Mandela once planned operations and hid from the government, a shopping centre with over 300 shops, a museum that houses the 2.1 million-year-old Mrs. Ples and other hominid fossils from the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, the military and transport museum as well as Mandela and Tutu house.

Importance: Arguably the best visual experience you will get into the history of South Africa’s apartheid years. If you have time to visit only one museum and wish to know more about the dark days of South Africa, then this is the museum to go to.
My Impression: From the moment you enter the museum, you are plunged into a new and shocking world. Even as a South Afrikaner myself, I was shocked to discover events that occurred and policies that were in place during my childhood that I did not know about. The museum has immense information to discover with a heavy focus on delivering this in a riveting audio and video format.
Opened in November 2001, the Apartheid Museum has become one of the top attractions in Johannesburg. Situated around 5km from Johannesburg centre and next to the Gold Reef City, the museum is often incorporated into a visit to the casino or the mine tours and theme park. Architects Mashabane Rose designed the museum to resemble the prison-like conditions of Robben Island while giving information on South Africa’s apartheid years from 1948
