    CARTHAGE

    • The Carthaginians fought three wars with Rome ( Fig. 1.2 ): ( a ) First Punic War (264 – 241 BC) over Sicily; ( b ) Second Punic War (218 – 201 BC), in which Hannibal ( Fig. 1.3 ) invaded Europe; and ( c ) Third Punic War (149 – 146 BC); Carthage lost the first two wars, and in the third it was destroyed.

    • Two centuries later, Rome brought the Berber kingdoms of Numidia ( Fig. 1.4 ) and Mauretania under its authority; the latter should not be confused with modern Mauritania ( Fig. 1.5 ).

    • In the 420s BC, the Vandals ( Fig. 1.6 ) invaded North Africa, and Rome lost her territories, but subsequently the Berber kingdoms regained their independence.

    • In the 1st century AD, Christianity spread to northwest Africa and by 313 AD the whole of Roman North Africa was Christian.

    • Roman presence of North Africa remained relatively small, and the beginnings of the Roman imperial decline seemed less serious than elsewhere.
