ROGER BALLEN AND THE FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL

Think of Joburg. Wildlife isn't the first thing that springs to mind.

But art and culture are up there. Roger Ballen's new Inside Out Centre for the Arts bridges the two. The space's inaugural exhibition, ‘End of the Game’, explores the decimation of wildlife in Africa, highlighting the ecological crisis on the continent through an artistic and historical lens.

The plan is for the Inside Out Centre to present shows that explore issues related to Africa ‘from a distinctively aesthetic and psychological perspective’, in keeping with Ballen's singular artistic vision. It will also host a programme of educational talks, panel discussions, masterclasses and presentations on the current exhibition, and arts and culture in general. Workbooks for teachers and learners on conservation and animal rights are being developed.

Dedicated to advancing education through the arts, Ballen set up the Roger Ballen Foundation in 2007. It was renamed the Inside Out
