IT’S hard to imagine a world where there are fewer and fewer mammals, amphibians, birds and reptiles – but this is the sad reality. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) says animal populations across the globe are getting smaller, but the good news is there’s still some time to try to fix the problem.
In a new report released by the WWF together with the Zoological Society of London, experts studied years of data on thousands of wildlife populations across the world. The Living Planet Report (LPR) reveals an average decline or drop of 69% in species populations since 1970.
“The message is clear and the lights are flashing red,” says WWF International director general Marco Lambertini.
“This is the last chance we’ll get. By the end of this decade, we’ll know whether this plan was enough or not – the fight for people and nature will have been won or lost.”
The LPR is released every two years and helps track the efforts of scientists to count wildlife
