About this ebook

Rivers of Thought, first published in 1959, is a small book of verses and poems written by the late Martin Buxbaum, who was best known for his publication of ‘Table Talk’ with the Marriott Hot Shoppes restaurants.

When the world has become so stressful, sometimes thoughts forever stand to give us comfort. Rivers of Thought is a book that can easily be put in a pocket or a purse, to draw some peace from. Almost sixty years after his thoughts were written, they remain a river of comfort to all who read them.

Martin David Buxbaum (1912-1991) was an American poet, author, editor and former communications and public relations director. He was named Maryland Poet of the Year in 1967. Born in Richmond, Virginia, Buxbaum was blind, but underwent a cataract operation which restored his sight. He moved to Maryland in 1934. He worked for Hechinger’s from 1934-1939, Diamond Construction from 1939-1941 and Sealtest Dairy from 1947-1953, before joining Marriott’s Hot Shoppes restaurant chain. There he became Director of Communications, edited their monthly publication Table Talk for many years, and received much acclaim for it. After retiring in 1978, Buxbaum went on to write eleven books, including Rivers of Thought (1959), The Underside of Heaven (1963) and Whispers in the Wind (1968), and became known as a photographer, artist and humorist. He also wrote two collections of essays, Around Our House (1968) and Table Talk for Family Fun (1972). He wrote for Reader’s Digest, served on the board of the Guidepost religious magazine, and had received awards from the Freedom Foundation. Buxbaum was married to his wife Alice for 45 years, and the couple had eight children. He passed away on March 20, 1991 in Maryland.

    RIVERS OF THOUGHT

    BY

    MARTIN BUXBAUM

    With Illustrations by the author

As the river of my thought flows on...through valleys of my life...so fast in utter happiness...so angrily in strife.

So very, very slow in grief...so musically in love...so flow all rivers guided...by the knowing God above.

    —MARTIN BUXBAUM
