The Life Of Bella - Amy Shearer

    The Prank

    ––––––––

    Bella was concerned,

The new year was to arrive

Yet she hadn't made her big show.

    ––––––––

    Shock and laughs were priorities

And no one should ever be hurt:

Those were the rules, this was her code.

    ––––––––

Once displayed, always to be heard,

    A memory to be preserved:

It would be the final big blow.

    ––––––––

A prank for the new beginnings,

The joke to cause a thousand laughs,

    Final weapon against boredom.

    ––––––––

    Unaware of Bella's intends,

    Her parents happily waited

    For the party and family

To arrive along with the moon.

    ––––––––

Does this tie match with my eyes, honey?

    Asked mom to dad.

    Astonishing as always, my love.

    Said dad, frank but biased.

    ––––––––

Meanwhile, Bella was in her room,

    Oblivious to the big prank

    She was living evidence of.

    ––––––––

    Waiting, designing a plan

    Easier to be performed

    Than to be put together.

    ––––––––

Bella walked out of her room

    With small efficient lasers

    Stuffing her coat's pockets.

    ––––––––

    The planning had taken long

    —too long, in her opinion—,

But it was worth the waiting

    For it was doubtless per-fect!

    ––––––––

    Nobody noticed her, she hoped,

When she crept into the living

    And arranged the pocket lasers

    In strategic hidden places.

    ––––––––

    It was about 5 o'clock

When she sneaked out the living room

Careful not to be heard or seen.

    The preparations were complete!

    ––––––––

At 6 o'clock: one and two knocks,

And three and four knocks, then a pause

It was Bella's dad, she was sure,

Since her mom always knocked three times.

    ––––––––

You should be getting ready, sweetheart,

Dad told her once he opened the door

And found Bella reading on her bed.

The party starts at 7 o'clock.

    ––––––––

    Despite her eagerness,

    Bella had to answer

    Pretending annoyance:

Do I need to go, dad?

    ––––––––

When he heard the answer, dad smiled

As though he had seen it coming

You will enjoy it, I promise.

    ––––––––

And, with the vow, he left Bella

    To her showering and dressing,

    And the hope and anxiousness

To see those words coming true.

    ––––––––

At the party, people danced and talked

While Bella just waited and waited.

    ––––––––

    Would have she enjoyed it

If it wasn't for her plans?

    Despite her dad's promise,

    Bella didn't believe so.

    ––––––––

    Adults were too boring

    and kids too excited.

    Bella, though, was just Bella:

Boring when she had to be

    But good at her excitement.
