The Doll
By Pointdexter Scotts

Chapter 1
––––––––
But Mommy, a lot of my friends overheard their parents saying that they are getting the doll,
said Emily sadly. The doll she was referring to was the hottest ticket for a young girl as a Christmas present. There were many variations, but they all included a large size perfect for snuggling, tough advanced
plastic for durability, gorgeous lifelike eyes and eyelashes, a selection of skin colors, dress colors, hair colors, and a beautiful hat matching the color of the gorgeous gown with a gemstone embedded in the center of the hat. Any girl that owned one would feel she had her own princess to take to tea parties, birthday parties, or even pajama parties. You could specialize one by online purchase or enter the local mall or supercenter and view their already made collection.
––––––––
Anyway, sweet young 11 year old Emily (like most girls in her class) felt like if she could get the doll this would be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Her parents knew that she was a sweet young lady who rarely had such eyes on such a beautiful thing, but who can explain the attraction between little girls (and adult girls) when it comes to dolls? That’s why her mother sighed and said, Warren, can you help me out here?
––––––––
The father, Warren, sighed as well and began, It may be hard, my Dear, for you to understand sudden financial difficulties.
––––––––
Oh, I know
said Emily. They have cut your hours, and Mommy can’t go back to work until at least next year because her work is seasonal.
Sometimes Emily’s parents momentarily forgot what a sharp young girl they had. Her favorite subjects were Math and Vocabulary and they sometimes forgot what a sponge she could be soaking up everything in the family news including her father’s frustration at being cut back on hours.
––––––––
Warren was momentarily taken aback, but at the same time proud of his little angel. Honey,
he said, I want nothing more than to see my princess happy. But I don’t want to make a promise I may not be able to keep.
––––––––
I understand Daddy,
said Emily in a somewhat resigned tone. She had noticed the cutbacks in the family budget. Daddy’s favorite specialty ice cream for dessert had been replaced by bowls of plain vanilla ice cream. Their monthly trips to the amusement park had been cut off to save gas money and entrance fees. Daddy used to buy a new set of work clothes every 2 months but now she couldn’t remember the last time he had even purchased new socks. Mommy used to have chocolates available in copious amounts (as Emily would put it), but now she could make a couple of chocolate candy bars last the whole month. Mommy did her best to patch up clothes and shop at discount centers. Emily’s parents still found the need to qualify her recently for the free lunch at school program rather than bring a bagged lunch with a special, inspiring note from Mommy (i.e. You are doing great keep going (:
).
––––––––
Mommy tried to break the silence by saying, Honey, want to help me bake some Christmas cookies?
Of course her answer was an enthusiastic Yes, I love when we dabble in the culinary arts.
––––––––
But even the cookies were different. This year everything, even the icing, was made from scratch. Emily didn’t mind so much using the powdered sugar (whereas in times past the premade icing and fancy decorating tubes were available) because she loved spending time in the kitchen with Mommy. But she still could not help but think about the beautiful doll. She didn’t care about skin color, eye color, hair color, dress color, they all seemed so beautiful to her. Her mother could sense that and asked as the smell of cookies wafted through the house, Isn’t this fun?
––––––––
Yes, Mommy,
replied Emily.
––––––––
And we are going to have a great Christmas because Gammy and Gampy are coming, and we have fun, and they always have fun stories to tell, and their gifts are homemade but that makes them special; and we can all build great memories and have good times and play hide the candy around the apartment and give you one hour to find all the pieces.
––––––––
Emily smiled. We do have such a great time, and I love it all tremendously.
She was debating about what to say next because it would bring up the elephant in the room but she simply asked, Mommy, did you play with dolls when you were young?
––––––––
Of course,
said Laura (Mommy), I still regret selling my doll collection to help pay for college. We could be playing with those dolls together and having tea parties.
Laura knew the words were badly worded (for lack of a better term) because that was another point for Emily to get that beautiful doll and have years of tea parties together. Emily knew she could have said something to point this out, but she was too sweet to throw that in Mommy’s face. There was a silence for a bit as they enjoyed pulling the cookies out of the oven and icing them, and then Mommy said, Let’s play a game.
––––––––
Yay, how about hide and seek
said Emily.
––––––––
How are we going to find enough hiding places in this apartment?
said Mommy.
––––––––
We could find the neighbors and play a huge game around the block
suggested Emily.
––––––––
Laura chuckled. You are a spontaneous, whimsical girl and I know that you know those words’ meaning.
She chuckled some more and said let’s go for it!
They were knocking on doors finding players and to this day that is how Hide-And-Seek-In-The-Snow is still an annual tradition on October Falls Street.

Chapter Two
––––––––
Laura and Warren were getting ready for bed. Laura blurted out, If she doesn’t get that doll I will be disappointed more than her, Honey.
––––––––
I know,
replied Warren. He sighed deeply. Sometimes at work I try to calculate how to do it.
––––––––
Well, unfortunately, even if you get a bonus those dolls will be sold out
lamented Laura.
––––––––
After a brief pause, Warren admitted I put it on layaway.
––––––––
Honey, that’s so sweet, but if we can’t buy it we lose money.
––––––––
I want to find a way. If not I will eat the cost, but we will find a way.
––––––––
They are cutting hours though.
––––––––
I am counting on a Christmas bonus; it has always happened in years past.
––––––––
What if not this year?
––––––––
We will find a way for our little freckle nose.
––––––––
Emily did not have freckles, but when she got the Chicken Pox she had a lot of little red bumps around that part of her face. Her father had called her freckle nose
teasingly. She initially did not like it, but when she realized it was a term of endearment (as she would put it) she was fine with the nickname.

Laura was satisfied
