Listen and Imagine - John Lee
The Burra Blad Bird Needs a Drink
The Burra Blad Bird was playing a game
he made up himself. It did not have a name.
That game, as he played in the heat, made him hot.
He said, I need a cold drink and will drink quite a lot.
––––––––
He went to the place where the drinks and the food
are kept in the cold 'til you get in the mood.
The place that is cold has surprises to find
like cake from last Christmas and pie, the green kind.
––––––––
He opened the door, and stuck his head
between two large bowls and an old loaf of bread.
He looked at the eggs and he looked at the greens,
sniffed at the chops and glanced at the beans.
––––––––
Some pizza was there from a day long ago.
Some strawberry jelly was starting to glow.
In a yellow container, something was living.
On a plate, he found turkey, last seen on Thanksgiving.
––––––––
He stood there so long he forgot, as he does,
what sounded so good. He forgot what it was.
He could not remember what sounded so good
but a question did come to his mind as he stood
––––––––
and looked at a light near an old apple core.
Does that light turn off when you close the front door?
He closed the front door but the close was too quick.
He just was not sure when he heard the door click.
––––––––
He closed it more slowly and tried hard to stare.
He blinked with his eyes when he felt the cold air.
The best he could tell, even closing so slow,
the light was still on. It continued to glow.
––––––––
But he still was not sure so he tried it again.
He knew little more now than when he began.
He tried twenty times. Closing fast. Closing slow.
He tried one more time. Still, he just did not know.
––––––––
He still was not sure after all of his stares.
The bird threw up his hands and said, Who really cares?
The Burra Blad Bird, still unsure of that light,
went back outside where the sunshine was bright.
––––––––
As he stepped in the sun, the heat made him think.
You know what sounds good now? A nice, tall, cold, drink.

The Burra Blad Bird at The Zoo
When you visit the zoo in a city near you
it will be lots of fun on that day.
At the zoo in my town, in the top of a tree,
a rare creature has chosen to stay.
––––––––
They have animals there, like lions and bears,
and others of which you have heard.
But up in a tree, as content as can be,
lives a very rare Burra Blad Bird.
––––––––
No one asked the Burra, he was not invited,
if he'd like to live in that tree.
He just settled in, made himself right at home,
