    THE EX CHRONICLES

    IT’S NOT TRUE THAT you can’t go home again. You can, although you may not always want to. I don’t mean home for the holidays or a weekend with the folks. I mean a tail-between-the-legs, yes-you-were-right, look-at-me-I-failed kind of going home. The kind that ranks right up there with root canals and Brazilian waxes. Ouch.

    As I rode through the streets of my old hometown in New Jersey, quite a few notions ran through my mind, precious few of them good. I pulled into the driveway of my childhood home and could see Ma standing in the doorway, all smiles, excitement palpable all the way out to me as I sat in my car, the trusty, rusty old Honda.

    I got out of the car, making a valiant effort to look happy, or at least not desperate and like I wanted to find the nearest high ledge.

    Oh, sweetie, how are you? My mother threw her arms around me, and I admit it, I fell into them and sobbed for a bit before I gathered myself and answered her.

    Nasho good. Imb na sho gud, ba. Duthig turdoud like I pladd.

    Speak up, dear, don’t mumble. And blow your nose.

    I extricated myself from her comforting embrace, wiped my nose, and sniffed. I’d been awfully snotty lately and it wasn’t helping my diction.

    Not so good, Ma. I’m not too good right now. Nothing turned out like I planned.
