    I’ll Be Right Back

    Ipeered through the leaded glass into the night, the cold shocking my forehead, the icy white flakes pinging against the door. I was grateful to be home for the weekend after a long day at work, annoyed at getting home so late, and on Iris’s day off too. But we’d spend the day together tomorrow, cocooned and safe from the storm. A blizzard had been forecasted, the first big snowfall of the season. From behind me I heard Iris rustling into her heavy coat, the one with the goose down lining.

    I’ll be right back, she said.

    At my feet, Petal, our seven-pound papillon, pranced around, doing that little skip step she does that makes us laugh. She jumped up and pawed at Iris’s leg. Iris reached for her leash.

    Don’t take her out now, I said. She can wait, can’t she? It’s nasty out there.

    Iris pulled Petal’s leash out of my reach and made that soft clicking sound with her tongue, the one she makes when she’s impatient.

    Well, here then, let me take her, I offered.

    She put her hand on my arm and pushed me back. No. Don’t worry about it. You go make some hot chocolate, why don’t you, I’ll only be a minute. Let me take her out before the snow gets any deeper. It’s not bad yet, only a couple of inches. Anyway, I’m a little stir crazy, I’ve been working around the house all day. The fresh air will feel good.

    She pulled
