Luxembourg – a piece of cake

Luxembourg is one of the smallest European countries, smaller than Rhode Island. Luxembourg is probably best known for its financial industry. Its investment fund industry is second only to that in the United States. Luxembourg is also the seat of the European Court of Justice Luxemburg. But Luxembourg also has a great variety of cake shops - patisseries. The quality, creativity and number of great family businesses is far greater than to be expected in such a small country. What is the secret? The cake tradition has influence from France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and some are local traditions. It is like a cross roads of cultural influence. The authors of this little guide sampled cakes and cake shops during a year in Luxembourg. The book has many pictures taken before the enjoyable consumption. Luxembourg City also has many valleys connected with stairs, so you can work off the extra calories simply by walking. If you bring a copy of the printed book to Paul's in Luxembourg, they will sign it. You can ask, if they have a promotion.

    Preface

Why would you eat cakes in Florida?

You want to lie on the beach and enjoy the good weather – and you have to watch that bikini line.

But if you have work to do, you need to eat.

And if you need to use your brain, it will demand sugar.

That is why students risk putting on weight – your brain demands high energy to do all that reading.

So, being a student in Florida due to exceptional circumstances, the brain directed at least one of us past the cake counter in the supermarket.

The cake counter was also often conveniently located so that you have a hard time missing it.

And do they make a sell of it!

The cake designs in Florida are absolutely fabulous, fantastic and wonderful!

We will tell a little story as we take a look at the cakes!

We hope you will enjoy this little book of cake design.

    Beach

The beach at Treasure Island in Pinellas County, Florida is incredible.

All along the coast of the island towards the Mexican Gulf there is white sand.

You share the beach with a large variety of birds who are quite tolerant of your intrusion into their paradise.

You share the beach with a large variety of birds who are quite tolerant of your intrusion into their paradise.

A trip to the beach is almost always popular.

According to the U.S Census Bureau's Statistical Abstract of the United States 2012, Table 1240, 58.67 million people in the United States went to the beach in 2010. However, according to

Flip Flop Report 2012 only 23 per cent of Americans expected to take a vacation to the beach within the next 12 months, against 54 per cent of respondents world wide.

Treasure Island is a romantic place. The official emblem is a one-eyed, one-legged pirate standing by his treasure chest with his sword drawn.

The name is fact based – a hotel owner buried two wooden chests on the beach and the discovered them again – claiming they were full of treasure....

You share the water with very rich marine life.

    Water column cake. ©Berna 2014.

There are five of the seven species of Sea turtles to be found along the coast of Florida. These are strange creatures originating in the Jurassic period 150 million years ago – at the same time as the dinosaurs

One interesting thing was the juvenile Hammerhead sharks (Sphyrnidae) which we noticed in incredible large numbers and quite small.

This huge party cake looks like a water column. Maybe there is someone with Publix supermarket cake dsign office who is diving, is an angler or even a biologist?

Here we have starfish – sea stars  - (Asteroidae) – various sea weeds – which is one of several groups of macroscopic multicellular marine algea – red, green or brown -  and on top a seashell -

The water culumn hypothesis is strengthened by the graduation of the blue color of the four layers of the cake – an almost white transparency at the top, and a little more blue added to each of the next three rings, with the darkest color being the bottom – precisely as you find it in the sea, in Nature.

There is various marine life on the cake emitting strings of bubbles of air that rises to the surface of the water column.

A real artist at work here.

If this is not enough beach for you, we move on to the next generous party cake below.

The giant seashell on top looks like some kind of mollusk or sea snail.

It opens to end as a musical instrument – a brass horn.
