    Chapter One

Becky drove in a daze down the freeway heading home for the day. She had left work early to run errands and was now done.

So when the lights flashed behind her she didn’t notice them right away either.

Only when the siren squawked at her did she finally look in the rear view mirror.

Shit. Shit. Shit. Becky said to no one but herself as she maneuvered her car over into the right lane then further over to the shoulder where she came to a complete stop, putting the car in park and turning it off.

Crap, this is all she needed.

Becky looked in the rear-view mirror again at the policeman who was not headed her way.

He had his hand resting on his gun, but he didn’t look like any cop she had ever seen, he was gorgeous.

He came to the driver’s side window and Becky quickly hit the button to slide it down. Becky looked up at him, he looked about thirty-five, brown hair, with scruff on his face and stood about 6’2".

Ma’am did you know you were speeding?

Ma’am, she was younger than him, No Sir, I didn’t realize I was.

    80 in a 65.

Becky looked shocked, I’m sorry, it’s been one of those days.

He smiled with a crooked grin and removed his sunglasses, pushing them back on his head and Becky drooled a little.

Bright green eyes stared back at her, Can I have your driver’s license and insurance please?

Sure. Becky grabbed her purse, dug out her wallet, and pulled out her driver’s license and insurance, handing them over.

He took them, I’ll be back.

She sat there looking in her rear-view mirror at the model cop sitting in his car typing into his computer she guesses.

This is all she needed, a ticket to have to pay like she had all the money in the world. Becky did have money, but it would soon run out and she would need to get a real job. Being a receptionist for a real estate developed just wasn’t cutting it.

Becky saw him coming back to her car, so she sat up just a little bit taller in her seat. She smiled when he reached her window.

He handed back her ID and insurance saying, I’m just going to give you a warning, but keep the speed down, ok?

Becky took her things, Yes Officer of course, thank you.

    You’re welcome Ma’am, have a nice day.

You too Sir. Becky replied with a smile. What was she doing? Was she flirting? Oh God, she was an idiot.

He walked back to his cruiser and Becky started her car, waited for an opening in traffic and drove off heading home.

Donovan sat in his car watching as she pulled out into her lane. Most women he pulled over tried everything in their power to get his attention. They openly flirted, showed cleavage, and some had even offered him sex to get out of a ticket.

But this woman, she had been a breath of fresh air. Looking down at his computer where her information was still on the screen, Becky Draper. She could have cared less about flirting with him or even getting out of a ticket he had never intended on giving her anyways.

The minute he had walked up to the window and looked into her stunning eyes, his heart jumped, and he had barely managed to say anything.

Donovan looked at her address, realizing she lived in the same area as he did, but he had never seen her before. He had to change that, there had to be another way to talk to this woman again.

Becky drover into the driveway to her home she had once shared with her husband. He’s been gone now for four years, but she still missed him every time she came home. It had been so lonely for so long. Becky hadn’t even dated anyone in that time either. She just wasn’t ready and wasn’t sure if she ever would be.

Becky thought about it a lot when she lay in bed alone. She thought she would give dating a try, but she never did.

When she had married her husband Marshall, she thought they would grow old together. He wasn’t supposed to die at the age of thirty-two.

After Donovan’s shift, he headed home. It was after eight, and he was exhausted. Driving around and sitting on his ass was exhausting.

Thoughts of Becky had come to him throughout the rest of his shift. He should have asked her out while she was right there in front of him. But it wasn’t the time. He would have to run into her when he wasn’t in uniform, but where?"

Becky went to sleep early so she would get up early and go for a run, then try out that new coffee shop she had seen down on Wilshire Rd.

Becky tried to read a little before sleeping but she only got through three pages, then woke up in the morning having slept on the book crinkling the pages.

She got up, put on some black leggings, a sports bra and t-shirt and headed out the door, locking it behind her.

Becky turned up the street and headed towards the shops that were about two and a half miles away.

It was still light outside as she approached the shop, seeing people already out and about.

She went in and came to a dead stop at the back of the line already formed. Well crap Becky thought, getting here early had been everyone’s idea, or this coffee was amazing.

They sure are busy, huh? Can a voice from behind her.

Becky turned around coming face to face with the cop from yesterday, Uh yep, they sure are.

Hey I know you. He said.

Becky smiled, You pulled me over for speeding yesterday.

Ah, but I didn’t give you a ticket.

    Thank you for that.

Sure. Do you live in the neighborhood?

    Yep, about two miles away.

So, we’re neighbors. Well I’m Donovan. He said, holding out his hand.

Becky looked down at his outstretched hand and took it, I’m Becky, it’s nice to meet you.

It’s nice to officially meet you too. Oh, hey the line is finally moving.

Becky turned to see a big gap between herself and the person in front of her. She quickly stepped forward before anyone gave her a dirty look, oh wait, too late. The woman behind Donovan was shooting daggers at her.

Donovan turned around to see what Becky was looking at, and the woman seeing Donovan’s face smiled brightly forgetting her earlier sour puss face.

Donovan turned back towards the line stepping close to Becky again.

So, did you just come from the gym? He said, looking down at her chosen outfit.

No, I just jogged here to try the coffee.

I normally go to the gym myself, but hey if you need a running partner, I would love to mix my workout out a bit.

Becky just stared at him, no words came out, Um I’ve never thought about it.

    "You
