    CHAPTER 1

I knew that they were trouble from the moment that they stepped into the bank.

From my spot behind the counter, sitting up closest to the door, I was the first to see them as they slouched inside. Both of the men had to be over six feet tall, and their menacing black leather jackets didn’t make them any less intimidating. My shiver caught the eye of the nearest man, the one holding the bag, and he glanced up and made direct eye contact with me. The intensity of his eyes caught me off guard - they were bright, icy blue, penetrating through me in an instant. We were a fairly small branch, but there were several exceedingly wealthy clients who lived in the huge ranches out on the outskirts of town. This kept my boss on edge, always ready to bow and scrape and serve his more economically gifted masters.

Welcome to Silver City Trust! he was already reeling off, speaking in polished tones, before even turning around the corner of his office. What can I do for you today…

As he caught sight of the two big men who had entered, my manager’s voice faded away. These were definitely not the wealthy clients that
