FOREWORD
COMMON YORUBA MYTHS & SUPERSTITIONS is a vintage collection of myths and superstitions common to Yoruba people of West Africa. The corpus comprises extant traditional beliefs, still found in practice, common to Yoruba people, and shared with other ancient tribes of Africa.
Myths and Superstitions are cultural distillations of ancient wisdom and experiences, passed down in oral form and traditions, to serve as general guide against certain acts and deeds that maintains the society.
All cultures of the world have their own unique set of myths and superstitions. Myths and superstitions were evolved by humans in their attempt to understand some of inexplicable phenomenon in the world and give meaning and structure to an otherwise inscrutable reality.
The Yoruba people developed a system of myths and superstitions based on their unique culture and traditional religion, most of which still find their way into modern times; observed unconsciously by the people in their day to day activities. A good example is the myth tied around child-naming in Yoruba land, held sacrosanct and strictly followed by Yoruba people wherever they might be in the world.
This monograph presents a batch of these beautiful Yoruba myths and superstitions for your enlightenment and enjoyment. While the main text is written in English language for easy understanding of Africans in Diaspora and global readers, they are supplemented with Yoruba sayings and proverbs that highlight the meaning of the text in bolder terms.
Explore into the mysteries and beauty of Yoruba Myths & Superstitions.
