The word traditional
in the last sentence is likely to raise some eyebrows. For some people, tradition
is about time-honoured orthodox doctrines that have been fossilised and are as such anachronistic. I do not use tradition in this sense. For me, tradition
is a repository for more than relics of generations past that are now currently exhibited in art, dance, drama and etiquette. Rather, tradition, the way I use it here, is about a world-view (be it ancient or contemporary) whose components can be tracked in time and in place to a group of people's thoughts and practices. So, whilst tradition must of necessity be historical, it can also be dynamic, current, and responsive to change and modification-as long as continuity of some fundamental ideas and practices are maintained.
