- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Excellent information on Egbe, especially since the author presents a portrait of a particular "road' of Egbe and it appears that the Author himself if from this particular Egbe Orun. I thoroughly enjoyed reading all of the aspects of this particular Egbe. The author expanded in detail the speciaI characteristics of this Egbe. I would loved to have seen more Ifa references to this particular Egbe. Dr. YeYe OlaOshun Lakesin, Egbe Iyalode

Elere Omo - Wale Owoeye
PREFACE
ELERE- OMO (The Spirit-Child) is a monograph made to espouse an aspect of Yoruba Culture that transcends all tribes and cultures in Africa- the concept of SPIRITUAL CONFRATERNITY as it affects corporeal beings in their earthly existence.
The concept of Abiku which is an adverse offshoot of Elere- Omo is familiar to people of African ancestry, being handed down from ancient generations via tales and legends. It involves a class of children who are born to die prematurely
, as a result of having alliance with a spiritual fraternity called Egbe, predestined before the birth of the child. The influence of this parallel universe of spiritual friends on Elere-Omo also reflects in the crisis they face at specific periods of their mortal life. It is a complex concept which this monograph will attempt to shed light on for the enlightenment of global audience.
Please note that submissions of the author are founded on his personal experience, exposure and opinions. They are in no way scientific truths
and should not be held as such. The concept of Elere-Omo is a Yoruba cultural phenomenon capable of finding resonance in other culture since the world is now a global village. Its incidences are varied and extant, even outside the shores of Africa and the concept holds a lot of significance today especially for Africans in Diaspora. This is the prime reason for publishing this book; to extend the universality of the Yoruba culture to the world.
It is hoped that at the end you will emerge more enlightened about this extant Yoruba cultural aspect, learning to respect and understand the Elere-Omo and their ilk wherever they are found.
CHAPTER 1
WHO IS ELERE-OMO?
Traditionally, there is no broad definition of who Elere-Omo is. This is because the term covers a multiplicity of phenomenon but with a central theme- that is, a child born with spiritual ties to a parallel world of existence. It is imperfectly synonymous with Abiku, Ogbanje, Emere and related kin but for the purpose of this book, I will only relate to Elere-Omo, using the term to refer to the broad group.
An Elere-Omo (Spirit-Child) is a child with covenant with a parallel world of spiritual friends called Egbe. This covenant, made at the predestination of the child before its corporeal existence, consists ultimately of a promise to die prematurely in life in order to return to the group of friends, only to return another time in a repeated cycle. It is a cultural aspect of
