Every day, 800 million women and girls all round the world menstruate. Periods are a fundamental part of everyday life – yet all sorts of prejudices exist around them. Women and girls often feel a sense of shame about their periods – but this was not always the case. Ancient cultures viewed menstruation very differently.
The word ‘menstruation’ originates from Latin words for ‘moon’ and ‘month’. Like the tides, periods have long been thought to have been controlled by the moon – and indeed, there is scientific research that suggests that there’s a link.
