Adult Fairy Tale
Once upon a time, I was a girl, not a queen. Sadly, girls grow up to face their destiny, face hidden truths. I was cursed with the power to shoot frozen water from my finger. My kingly father was forced to tell me who I really was. In all honesty, even he didn’t know.
In my parents eyes, I was an afflicted daughter. In my own reflection, I saw a conflicted young woman, fear and emotions running wild. Though society cared not. They expected a queen. I knew if they ever saw my powers, I’d be deemed an evil troll. I’d be burned at the stake.
And that was just the beginning...

Queen Elin
Once upon a time, I was just a girl, not a queen. Sure, I was born wealthy, raised in a magnificent castle with servants, though my royal parents raised us with love and respect. I never saw myself as different…but I was.
My sister, Annika, was my best friend. In truth, having no playmates, we were more than friends. We were each other’s everything. The two of us played within the confined castle gates, protected from strangers. After all, it was the royal way. However, we occasionally went on private excursions, marveling at Anderland’s beauty.
It was a place more breathtaking than magic itself. Tall mountains towered miles into the air, framing our castle perfectly. Fresh glacial waters reflected our kingdom like a mirror, and summer greenery glowed neon in the sun’s rays. In winter, ice glistened every inch of rocky ground.
Winter was my season, the one time of year I felt at home within my skin. Shooting ice from my fingers was a gift, at least at that time. Annika and I would head into the courtyard, building a world of snowy wonders.
Our most prized creation was a goofy snowman named Otto. I’d blast icy streams from my fingertips. Then, raising my voice high, I’d speak forth the mounds of lifeless snow. Young Annika watched in mesmerized excitement. Hi, I’m Otto. I like warm snuggles,
I’d say.
Laughing in high-pitched squeals, my baby sister would wrap her arms around the carrot-nosed, stick-handed creation. It crumbled every time. Again, Elin! Again!
she’d beg me to rebuild him. As tired as I was, I did it for her.
I was my redheaded sister’s protector. She was the warmth in my heart. Oddly enough, we couldn’t have looked any different. While her hair was the color of fire, mine was the color of sun-kissed snow.
Annika’s skin was like fresh peaches, mine was pale. She was curvy, I was thin. Her eyes were green as grass, mine glacier blue. I was to be queen first, she unlikely to ever be queen at all, though I accepted my responsibility.
At the age of 8, father pulled me aside, The only true power you possess…is granted by the citizens of Anderland. Your subjects hold the key to your fate. Walk with grace before them, never show your weaknesses…or emotions…it could be your undoing,
he warned. I saw the fear in his eyes. It hurt to suddenly realize the source of his agony was me. It was the first time he made me feel different…strange. I felt like a disgrace to the family name.
My world suddenly took on a different color, dare I say, deep blue. I began to notice the look on the servants’ faces, expressions, which were likely there through the years. They fear me, I thought.
My ears opened to castle rumors of witchcraft and sorcery. They told tales of baby bottles turned to solid ice. Then came the whispers of me freezing my bedroom walls. Father couldn’t hide it forever, no matter how much he’d threatened the staff.
Those women didn’t dare talk of my secret openly. Father would’ve had their heads for speaking against the crown’s future. He ran a tight ship, ensuring those rumors would never reach the public ear. As long as my mysterious power was hidden, nothing came of it. That was, until Annika’s 7th birthday.
I was 10 at the time. I remember her begging, Make me a big slide with your magic, Elin!
How big?
I asked, always happy to please her.
Huge! I wanna slide straight into the fjord!
Father will be furious,
I warned.
Just this once…I’ll never ask again, promise.
After pausing in apprehension, I gave in. I’ll do it for your birthday only…it comes down after,
I said, preparing to grant her wish.
Holding my hand outward, I extended my fingers toward the outer castle walls. Conjuring energy within, frozen particles of ice shot out, as if from my blood. Annika’s excited shrill filled my ears, a detailed bridge formed over the castle wall. I kept firing the cold stream until the bridge touched the fjord. Unable to see over the walls, I pictured it in my mind.
You’re the best, Elin!
Annika said, hugging me tightly. Love you, sister!
And I, you. Now, go take your birthday slide.
K!
Annika said, climbing the tall ice stairs up to the slippery slide. I climbed up behind her, making sure she didn’t slip. Right as I reached the top, a frightening sight appeared. Oh no! The fjord isn’t fully frozen, the ice is too thin! Annika will go right through! Stop!
I shouted frantically, trying to reach for my sister.
Sadly, she descended straight down the bridge at a fast speed. I took the plunge myself, trailing a distance behind her. Knowing I’d never catch up, I shot an ice blast at the bridge’s end.
My heart raced, as panic filled me. My shaking fingers sent my aim awry. That was the moment I discovered my emotions made me more powerful. It also made me a prisoner to their control.
Until that moment, life had been pretty consistent, my emotions never truly tested. I caught Annika before she went through the ice. Sadly, the ice went through her, freezing inside.
Annika!
I screamed in bloody fear. Scraping my feet and fingernails into the ice slide, I slowed before impact. We gently touched down on the stiffened fjord surface. Grabbing hold of her tightly, I shouted, "Father! Mother! Come quickly! Annika’s hurt! Annika’s…frozen. I…froze her!"
Running through the dark woods with Annika in his arms, I’d never seen father so afraid. Mother and I followed behind him. Where are we going?
I asked.
He didn’t answer.
I spoke again, Father…where are we…
Mother shouted, You’ve done enough damage, Elin! Keep quiet!
Her tone was uncharacteristically angry.
All I could do was follow them. The dark forest was nothing compared to my haunting thoughts. Even if Annika lives, she’ll never forgive me. Father and mother…hate my guts.
Finally reaching a dark, dingy cave, he stopped. Holding up his firelight, he led us just inside. There were strange symbols carved into the walls, letters I’d never seen before. There were strangely carved rocks, also bearing the symbols. It looked like a creepy, cultish temple. I wanted to ask, Father, have you lost your mind? Of course, I knew better.
Father started chanting gibberish, his voice carried deep into the cave’s dark bowels. He began shouting at the ground itself. Suddenly, hands emerged from the dirt, rising like the undead.
Their fingernails were long, sharp, and dirty. Stubby, leathered arms pulled their strong bodies up. Hair, dark and straw-like, and eyes of glowing green shone through the darkness. Suddenly, long, knobby noses appeared.
One of the creatures approached father, wearing a crown made of mangled roots. He opened his mouth, revealing brown, sharpened teeth. The oddest thing was their massive penises. Clothes obviously weren’t their thing.
Father spoke more gibberish, ending with a word I knew well. "…Troll."
Gasping in fear, I backed away. Trolls?
I interrupted. They were the stuff of folk magic, the bad kind. They eat us!
Quiet!
Father shouted at me.
A deep, scratchy voice suddenly shouted us down. The child. Bring her to me,
he said, pointing at Annika.
I trembled again, having always heard that trolls hunger for children most. I stood, tensely watching father hold Annika out towards him. The troll’s eyes hungrily zeroed in on her. Placing his clawed hands upon her stomach, his expression softened. "The magic hit organs…though missed her heart," he growled.
My parents breathed sighs of relief. Can she be healed?
Father asked in hope, kissing Annika’s head.
Correct. Though as you know all too well, magic…requires a sacrifice,
he said, pointing directly at me.
I was both confused and terrified. Sacrifice? I’m…a sacrifice? Too upset to ask questions, I just watched the troll’s eyes stare me down like a buzzing gnat.
Looking over at mother, father nodded. Turning back towards the troll, father said, Will it be…as bad as Elin?
"No. It will, however, take many memories away. Most of all, Annika will forget the magic her sister possesses ever existed. With age…Elin’s magic has also grown. She must be isolated, and learn how to control it in her own way. Until then, the sisters must be separated."
Tears streamed down my cheeks. But…I’ll miss her.
Father looked sad, though nodded. "We must accept that deal…in return for her life, he said, turning back towards the troll.
Heal her."
Shutting his eyes, the troll began to shake. The green light behind his lids glowed extra bright, suddenly leaping from his palm like a lightning bolt. As the light faded away, Annika jolted. She passed out in her father’s arms, but life returned to her cheeks.
Thank you, King Hrungnir,
my father said, bowing to the Norse legend.
The troll’s eyes fixated on me again, staring me down. As we turned to leave, I saw a young, blond boy watching from the cave’s depths. He was joined by a wolf, of all things. However, before I could tell Father, the troll called out, "Tell the girl who she is. Tell her…what she is."
Father paused, not even turning back. He seemed upset by the words, marching forward. We’re going home.
Forgetting all about the peeping boy, I followed my family home. The walk back through the dark woods was a long, sad one. No one spoke a single word. As newfound darkness swirled inside my heart, the mysterious power only intensified.
Feeling a cold tickle on my cheek, I reached to wipe it away. That’s when I realized, My tears…froze! Chiseling them off my cheek, I hid them from father’s sight. My sister’s life was saved, though from that point forward, our relationship would die a slow death.
After putting Annika to bed, Father took me into the throne room. It was decorated in tones of red; even the throne’s fabric was a crimson silk. Sitting in the golden chair, a grim look crossed his face. I’m sorry, Daughter. It hurts me to tell you this…
Am I…bad, Father?
I asked.
His face tightened in greater sickness. "No…not bad at all. You’re just…different."
The troll…pointed at me. He said I was…a sacrifice?
My father’s face saddened. "You’re not the sacrifice. The sacrifice…is what we had to trade in order to spare your life."
My life? I was…sick?
Your mother was pregnant with you. Something went wrong with the birth…she was getting horrible pain. It was clear…you weren’t going to make it.
Tears filled father’s eyes.
You brought me to the trolls…like you did with Annika?
I did. Our midwives and doctors…their only cure was to bleed your mother. I knew it wasn’t right…that only brings further sickness and death. I wasn’t willing to risk either of you to such barbarism.
But…I thought trolls were only in my storybooks. I thought they were evil…
Don’t believe most of what you read in life, child. It’s likely written by your enemies. Every king and queen…upon coronation…is told the truth. Trolls are neither good nor evil…they belong to the Earth, drawing upon its mystical energy. I knew where to find them, knew what power they held. Sadly, I also knew that there was a price to pay…a sacrifice.
"So then…I really am a sacrifice."
No, my daughter,
he said, pulling me to the throne, sitting me on his lap. You’re my pride…my love…as you were upon birth. We didn’t know what to expect. The troll’s light glowed, and your mother’s womb pain stopped. You were saved…that’s all that mattered to us. It was just…surprising…at the delivery.
What happened, Father? Please tell me.
You were…blue.
Blue?
Yes. As you breathed air, the color faded, though your blood…stayed royal blue. We hoped that was the only flaw…though things started happening with age. Ice was left in your path, eventually shooting from your fingers. It became clear…your price for life…would be a heart of ice.
I sighed in sadness. However, I pretended otherwise. Hugging father, I said, Thank you, Father. Thank you for saving me.
He hugged me back so tightly, I felt his strain. I knew he feared that the gift, which kept me alive, would be the curse, which brought down my rule. It would destroy my family’s rule as well. Father said, I’m sorry, Elin. You…must…be…
Kept away from my sister,
I said in deep sadness.
Yes…for both your sakes.
Princess Annika
Elin…please come out of your room. It’s snowing…and…it’s my birthday!
I begged.
Did I expect my older sister to open her locked bedroom door? No. The truth is, one
