    Chapter one

    Good afternoon, Katie.

Well, good afternoon, Dr. Blendmore, what can I do for you today?

Katie, I'd like my usual and a beard trim.

Yes, Sir, Dr. Blendmore have you had a rough day today, Edward?

The usual, Katie, sometimes I think the whole world is full of hypochondriacs. You wouldn’t believe some of my patients. If they hear of a new disease and they hear the symptoms described for that disease, they’re sure that's what's wrong with them."

    You're kidding, of course...

    No, Katie, I'm quite serious.

Really! What makes people like that?

That's a mighty good question, Katie, unfortunately, I’m a medical doctor and not a psychiatrist. After twenty years of being a doctor, I still have no rational idea what really makes the human mind tick.

Well, Edward, you wouldn’t believe some of the characters that come in here to see me. Sometimes we really get some dozes, if you know what I mean.

I've got a real good idea, Katie.

Edward, if you don't mind me saying you're getting a few gray hairs, I can dye them for you if you like, so they aren’t so noticeable.

I appreciate the offer Katie, but I'm growing older and it's just a natural process. Besides, gray hair makes me look distinguished, anyway. I always wanted to be known as a distinguished gentleman.

Katie chuckled. As I had always suspected, I'm in the presence of a distinguished gentleman, Katie said with a smile.

I always enjoy coming here, Katie, no matter how bad my day was, you can always bring a smile to my face.

Well, thank you, Edward, that's quite a compliment.

I rarely say anything I don't mean, Katie. If you didn’t work here, I’d get my hair cut somewhere else. You always agree with a bright smile, and you always have something pleasant to say that brightens my day. Katie blushed.

Well, what do you think, Dr. Edward Blendmore? She turned the barber chair to face the full-length mirror.

Katie, it looks wonderful as always. You’re a miracle worker.

Well, thank you, Edward, I guess I am. Modesty doesn't become you, Katie, I'm going to give you a big head. Katie chuckled. After Dr. Blendmore had left, Katie glanced at the clock on the wall. It was eight thirty. Katie picked up the microphone and announced Last call for haircuts!

Moments later Katie heard the chime of the elevator, and saw Dr. Phristine step off the elevator and rush toward the barbershop. Katie, do I still have time for a hair cut?

Of course, Dennis, I've always got time for you, Katie said with a smile. After Katie cut his hair, she turned the sign on the door from open to closed, and proceeded with the routine of closing the shop. Katie was just getting ready to count the money and the register, when the building maintenance supervisor, Gerald Fillmore arrived. Another man wearing gray coveralls was following him closely. As Gerald Fillmore walked through the door, the other man followed behind. "Katie, I'd like to introduce you to Thomas Garland. He's a new man we've just hired today as our new sanitary engineer.

Pleased to meet you, welcome aboard, Katie said with a smile.

It's a pleasure meeting you too, Ma'am. Thomas said, returning the smile.

Katie, I've got a new one for you to break in. Just tell him how you want things done and he will take care of it for you.

All right, Gerald. Gerald Fillmore turned to leave and Katie cried out, Can't you stay until he's finished?

No, Katie, I really can't. I'm breaking in three new men on the twentieth floor.

    But, Gerald...

I'm sorry, Katie, but I really have to go. Thomas is a nice guy, and you don't have anything to worry about. Katie motioned for Gerald to come closer, and whispered in his ear, Are you sure?

Yes, Gerald said, you don't have anything to worry about. Gerald turned and left Katie standing there with Thomas just outside the door.

Katie opened the door wide and said, Well, Thomas, come on in and let's get you started.

All right. Katie described what needed to be done and what was expected of him. Once Thomas knew exactly what was expected of him, he began to work. Katie watched him through the corner of her eye, as he began cleaning up. She didn’t like to distrust people, but it had become second nature to her since her divorce. Her ex-husband was abusive, he was bipolar by nature, and had a cocaine addiction which made him extremely unpredictable. Her divorce had been granted on the grounds of physical and mental abuse, and after twelve years of marriage she was finally legally divorced.

Her experiences with her ex-husband had left her extremely paranoid and leery of people she didn’t know. It also left her with a nervous condition, which was treated with medication.

Before she began counting her money, she nervously asked him to turn his back until she finished. She finished counting the money in the register, removing it, and trembling slightly as she slid it into a bank bag. It wasn't that I didn't trust Thomas Garland. I didn’t know him and didn't trust anyone I didn’t know. Taking a seat, I waited for Thomas to complete his job. I sat watching him nervously, as he performed a repetitious task of cleaning the shop.

It was a task, which I had observed hundreds of times previously, under more comfortable conditions. After he had completed his duties, I walked to the door.

Even though he had been a perfect gentleman thus far, I still felt extremely nervous being alone with him. As he exited, I exited and closed the door, inserting the key into the lock and turning it. I picked up the courtesy phone and paged Gerald Fillmore. It took several minutes for him to return my call.

I'm terribly sorry, Katie, I'm training three new fellows on the twentieth floor. Get Thomas to walk you out to your car, and tell him once he has finished walking you to your car, to get his ass up to the twentieth floor.

With an uneasy voice Katie called out to Thomas, Tommy...

Thomas was walking down hall and turned, Did you call me, Ma'am?

Yes, Tommy, come here, please.... He turned and began walking toward the barbershop. Katie felt butterflies in her stomach as Thomas approached. Tommy, she said reluctantly, I need you to walk me out to my car, please.

    Yes, Ma'am, He said.

Tommy, it's not Ma'am, its Ms. Tisdale. Ma'am makes me feel old. He walked beside her as she walked to her car.

Once safely inside her car, Katie rolled the window down slightly and said, thank you, Tommy. Oh, by the way, Mr. Fillmore wants you to go up to the twentieth floor.

He's got some work for you to do." After he turned to walk away, Katie rolled up the window, started her car, and drove away.

The following day, just before closing time, he arrived.

This time Katie didn't have to explain anything about his job.

Thomas went right to work, knowing to keep his back to Katie while she counted the daily receipts, and had completed his job only minutes after Katie had finished counting the money in the register, and placing it into the bank bag. Katie felt a little less nervous this time, and even told Thomas she thought he did good work.

When it was time for her to leave, Gerald Fillmore was there, Johnny on the Spot, to walk her out to her car.

This scenario went on for several months with very little variation, until the week that Gerald Fillmore had left on his vacation.

Upon arriving at closing time, he told Katie that his supervisor began his vacation today. Katie was preoccupied and wasn't paying attention to what Tommy was talking about. After he had completed his job, he waited patiently as Katie finished counting the money in the register, and slid it in to the bank bag.

Tommy, you did a good job, Katie said, smiling at him. He stepped outside the door of the barbershop, and Katie soon followed.

After she had locked the door, Katie turned around, expecting to see Gerald Fillmore standing there, waiting to walk her out to her car.

Katie looked at Thomas, puzzled. Tommy, where is Gerald at? Katie asked.

Ms. Tisdale, like I told you earlier, Mr. Fillmore is on vacation this week.

I'm sorry I guess I didn’t hear you, Katie said, apologetically. Thomas, will you walk me out to my car?"

Why, of course, Katie, that's why I'm still standing here, waiting on you!"

As they walked out to the parking lot, the sky opened up and they were both soon drenched from the tropical downpour.

Even though Tommy looked away, Katie blushed as she realized that her brassiere was visible through her wet white blouse.

Katie averted her eyes from the revealing wetness of Tommy’s clothes.

I'm so sorry that you got so wet, Ms. Tisdale, she said, cringing with embarrassment.

Without another word, Katie got into her car, removed the towel from her seat, and began drying off the rain from her arms and face.

After starting her car, Katie rolled down her window slightly, and shouted out, Tommy, you had better get back inside the building before you catch your death of pneumonia. He was walking back toward the office building as Katie drove away.

After Katie had arrived at her house, once inside she quickly changed out of her wet clothes, a hot shower sounded real good.

The warmth of the water felt wonderful against her chilled flesh and the hot water rejuvenated her relieving the feelings of tiredness and the aching she had experienced in her joints. After Katie had changed into her nightgown and was in bed, she began to relax. As she did, Katie began to experience a feeling of sudden uneasiness once more, as she thought of the silhouette that she had seen through Tommy’s wet trousers.

The following evening, just before closing time, he showed up and began cleaning the barbershop as usual.

After Katie had finished counting the money in the register, and placing at into the bank bag, she turned to look at Tommy as he continued working.

After completing the task of cleaning her shop, he continued his duties, moving next to the cleaning of the hallway.

"All right then, I'm ready for you to walk me out to my car now. I brought an umbrella this time just in case. Last night was embarrassing for both of us, Thomas, let's forget it ever happened, and never mention it again.

    Are we agreed, Thomas?"

Of course, Ms. Tisdale, he said.

Katie sighed a breath of relief as she got in her car.

Even though she was sure that Thomas had seen her brassiere through the wet material, he hadn't acted any different, and she felt relieved.

She would never admit to having seen a silhouetted image through his wet trousers, nor the awkward feeling she felt after seeing it.

This was something she hadn’t admitted even to herself, and would never admit what she saw, much less how it had made her feel.

Once Katie was inside her car, Thomas turned and walked away. As he was walking toward the building, Katie caught herself taking an admiring glance at his rear.

After Katie got home, ate dinner, completed her nightly routine, and went to bed, she found thoughts of Tommy kept intruding in her head.

She did not want to have any awareness of him as a man, because the image of a man always flashed back to her ex-husband and frightened her.

She had found herself growing to respect him due to noticing he was a hard and careful worker. It made her uncomfortable that her thoughts had been wandering to different things he said or did, and how he never intruded on her in any way.

The feelings she was experiencing frightened her and maybe even excited her a little bit, they were feelings, which had been buried lying dormant for years. Feelings Katie thought had died long before her divorce. Katie tried hard to sleep, but sleep would not come.

Katie wrestled with her feelings for hours, and at some point drifted off to sleep.

Sleep brought her into a disturbing and vivid dream, before today Katie would have never ever considered Tommy as anything more than a janitor who worked in her building.

Tonight, as she lay alone in her bed, she dreamt seeing a man lying next to her in bed. She could see his face wasn't that of her ex-husband ... It was Tommy's face.

Recognizing his face brought her a feeling of peace and contentment. Then her dream self began to realize Tommy didn’t belong in her bed, and the vivid image awoke her.

Katie felt despondent; the image in her dream disturbed her greatly, even more so as she realized that she had actually experienced feelings of comfort as he lay beside her.

This was the first dream of this kind that she could remember ever having.

Katie shrugged off the idea that she might actually feel some sort of attraction for Tommy.

She got out of bed, made herself a cup of hot chocolate, and afterwards
