And now for your scrutiny and reading pleasure Elby Lisbil presents: My Peggy Sue.

    Chapter 1

Peggy Sue having arrived in Nevada, unintentionally being left at a truck stop by the driver who'd brought her in his truck from Spur Texas and left her right smack dab in the heart of Las Vegas. A mere seventeen years old, she left home, having run away from her mother who was becoming intolerable after her father had run off with another woman, leaving her mother to find for herself and the four children alone.

Having found herself homeless, displaced, and destitute in Las Vegas, she was in a dangerous situation having to sleep out in the desert any place she could find, then during the day, seek out employment and still make it to the mission on time to get a meal of sorts, Employment there was as it was in any big city. . . Lots of work to be had but without a phone and transportation and not knowing the lay of the land, very difficult to get unless you were very lucky.

Her age was also another major stumbling block. Though she looked years older than she actually was, that only helped to a certain point in that she did not have the appearance of being a minor nor for that matter a runaway. She had a Texas identification card and a social security card so could prove who she was if she had to, but being under age and a runaway, she could only hope that she did not have any legal encounters with the law.

Peggy Sue managed to pick up some work of sorts, a few hours here and there for cash, managing to keep herself clean using public rest rooms when she could and getting a clean change of clothes from the local branch of family charities. She'd been lucky thus far that nothing bad had happened to her and knew she must do something very quickly before her luck ran out. She went back to the truck stop where she had been left nearly two months earlier, and giving it a try once more, she'd finally managed to hitch a ride to Fallon from a driver headed to Reno.

Though she knew nothing about Fallon nor Nevada for that matter, she had heard that Fallon was a nice small town and if she were to get work there, she would be a whole lot better off there than being in Vegas, it had to be better than Vegas, regardless. A small, almost tourist town, it had little work to offer, and once more she found herself sleeping out in the desert, a short distance from town and eating at a small mission, sponsored by the local Baptist church, unable to get even meager employment.

It was like a pre-birthday gift of sorts, a week before her 19th birthday she'd landed a job of sorts, referred to Mrs. Beecher by an older woman that she'd met one day in the park after being interviewed by Mrs. Beecher's daughter, Tina Wilson, she'd landed a position taking care of the invalid older woman. The job included free room and board and sixty dollars a week spending money for herself. It was a dream come true even though the work was sometimes difficult and often tiring. Sarah Beecher quickly developed a fast friendship with Peggy Sue, who was taking care of Sarah as she'd always thought she might do for her own mother in her mother's declining years.

It was working out to be a perfect arrangement for them both, the two of them getting a long almost like a daughter and mother, Sarah's own daughter, Tina, a bit jealous of their closeness on one hand, yet grateful one the other but critical about her mother's welfare. Sarah's health was failing though the doctors were doing all they could, even so she'd hung on long enough for her and Peggy Sue had shared two birth days together, Sarah passing away just one week before Peggy Sue's twenty first birthday.

Panhandling was strictly illegal throughout the entire state, even so, after Sarah's death she was once more broke and homeless, unemployed and becoming desperate. Flying a sign at a major intersection just outside of town, she did manage to get a little money from a very few of the passers-by early in the day, too hot and almost intolerable to be out in after it was later than noon so she only had a six hour window in which to get whatever she could. Early one morning, out flying a sign again she kept an eye upon the road closely for the County Sheriff's Department as they patrolled the area fairly regularly, yet unable to find work, panhandling was becoming an almost daily ritual.

Her backpack strapped securely, she had been standing there only a few minutes when a Sheriff's patrol car pulled up, distracted by a biting fly she'd not seen him coming. Too late now, lucky for her the officer had not seen her sign and assumed that she was just another hitchhiker. Giving her a firm warning and informing her as to the illegality of hitchhiking in the state of Nevada offering her a ride back to town. He also informed her that though prostitution was legal in Nevada, it was only legal in brothels, not tolerated and strictly illegal otherwise. When they neared the Baptist church she asked him if he would let her out there so she might get something to eat. He did and after waiting nearly an hour, she began walking back toward the intersection.

About a quarter of a mile from the intersection, having taken the cardboard sign from her back pack, she held it out as an old pickup was about to pass her. Seeing the

sign, the man in the truck pulled over to the shoulder of the road, and stopped.

It was a twist of fate for Peggy Sue, a good one for a change, though she had no idea what fate held in store for her. As she walked up to the truck she half expected the man driving it to flirt with her as many did, and maybe to get a buck or two if she was lucky. As she walked up to the truck the man said, Down on your luck I see, are you hungry?

A sheepish smile upon her face she said, Well, yes, sir, can you help me? That said, she expected that he would give her some money and he'd be on his way.

A bright smile upon his face he said, Well then Little Missy, you're in luck, I am heading into town and after I get gas I'm headed for the restaurant to get some breakfast. You're welcome to come along, my treat of course, unless. . .

Silent and hesitant she looked at him, sadness in her pale blue eyes. With a soft Texas draw that reminded her of her home, he said, Heck, isn't nothing to be worrying your little head 'bout, you-un will be as safe as a bug in a rug.

Sill hesitant she looked at him, leery though hungry she said, Then, what. . .

Well then, are you up to you, got a place down the road a piece, 'bout thirty miles from here, my uncle left me. . . Not much, but reckon you'd be welcome to stay a spell if you had a mind to, that is. He said smiling, Now come on girl, times a wasting, we are burning day light, what is it going to be?

Peggy Sue, no longer hesitant having seen a Sheriff's patrol car coming, out of the corner of her eye, grabbed the door handle pulling the door open, climbed in and took a seat, then closed it quickly. He left the shoulder slowly as the traffic cleared and had just barely headed down the road toward Fallon as the patrol car passed them. Nervous, she began to talk after several moments had passed. A quiver was in her voice as she began speaking, What was your name again?

Sorry, thoughtless of me, don't reckon I gave you one. . . Timothy, my name is Timothy, sorry, Ma'am.

Okay, then, Timothy, I’d be obliged if you were to help me, but just what is it you are expecting in return for helping me, huh?

Nothing, Ma'am, really, nothing, he said sheepishly.

All right then, maybe, for shits and giggles, let's just say I believe you, so why then would you put yourself out to help me? she said sarcastically.

Had not really pondered it, I reckon that just maybe I sort a feel sorry for you.

Well, as good as any, all right then. . . My name is Peggy Sue, so Timothy what is it you are doing at this place your uncle left you? she asked bluntly.

It's a mining operation, hard work and little money, but I reckon it's belonging to me and the state as well as the BLM.

A mine really, what kind of mine? she asked.

Well, Ma'am, I've got twenty hard rock claims and ten that are placer.

    She looked at
