    Hemi Porter

    1:10 pm

    Nico's place.

    121 Arthur St, Onehunga.

    Auckland. New Zealand.

I stood with my mate, sipping on a few beers on his deck. The day is hot, I'm sweating in my suit, and I wonder why I decided to wear the three piece number on a summer's day. The consequences of my vanity. The beer in my wet hand is a corona, delicious and refreshing I can feel all the carbs adding inches to my ever ballooning waist.

An hour before Nico was in a fight with his ex-wife's boyfriend, Jack. He's nursing a frozen bag of peas on his bulging eye. Nico Joel you see is my best mate from school. Isn't it odd when you grow up with people you experience the same things? Both of us met our partners at the same time, then married in the same sort of time, only now he is going through a divorce and has now met another woman. This dodgy as foreigner named Kerryn, who lives in a van with a baby who is now in Nico’s kitchen cooking food! It’s like we are leading parallel lives or something. I have a seven-year-old son Milan, and Nico has a five-year-old daughter India. I watch as Kerryn, comes out with food when my phone vibrates, it’s Mary, my dearly beloved. I read the text message.

O2102343: Come now Nicole is outside banging on the doors and windows!

    Shit! I say, God damn!

    What? Nico asked.

Nicole. I said, She at Mary's house throwing her tantrums. I gotta go.

    Ok, Nico said.

My eyes flicked to Kerryn, she pauses and takes the bowls back to the bench. She opens up a white bottle and pours in a clear liquid. Could like vinegar but it could be bleach...

Hey. Did you ask Kerryn about the thing... I asked Nico in a suspicious tone.

Not yet, Nico said, the bloody chicken shit.

Kerryn approaches, coming with two bowls of food. Probably filled with rat poison so she can rob our asses. My phone vibrates again, my exit hastens I need to be a hero once again.

Check her man, I say to Nico, as I left for my car.

I drove back headed east via Church St to Gt South Rd, gunning it back at blistering pace getting snapped by a few speed cameras along the way. Mary sent a text that she is at my house and not hers. I recognize Nicole's black VW golf in the middle of my long driveway. I park on the street and sprint down. Nicole is screaming out, Calling Mary a whore and whole lot of other curses, from the side of the house. She's wearing faded blue jeans and black sneakers. Her white t-shirt is torn, stained with grass and mud like she rolled around in the dirt like a pig. There are twigs and leaves entangled in her blonde hair.

Hey! I shout. She stops and turns to me. Her arms drop, she walks like Godzilla straight for me. The sliding door behind Nicole opens, and Mary runs out. Her hair is all mangled like it's a bird nest.

Nicole presses her finger into my chest. Her sharp red nail will be sure to leave a mark, perhaps another hole in my heart. I push it away, and I hold Mary, checking her if she's alright.

I say to psycho bitch girl, What the hell is wrong with you?

Nicole's nostrils flare up so large I could put my fists up them. Tell this fat piece of shit behind you, that she no place taking our son to the zoo!

It was a day trip, I was there too? When I have Milan, we can do what the hell we want! I say, What’s your problem?

So you want to confuse our boy by playing happy families? Huh? I'm Milan's real mother. Nicole flicks her eyes to Mary, And you spoiling my child, with trinkets and junk. Who the heck do think you are?

Mary said, They were presents for his birthday.

I don't give a damn! she shouts Ever since my son met you, you've been feeding him crap food. Sweets and chocolate. In his ear, filling his mind with bullshit. Turning him against me. Now he doesn't want to stay with me.

I roll my eyes and shake my head. Well, I wonder why?

Shut up Hemi. You are just as bad.

Huh? I scratched my head. Please enlighten me you crazy ass.

Nicole puts her hands on her hips. She's still wearing her wedding ring. Bitch better be taking that off! "You're only dating Mary so you can get back at me! You know deep down you love me."

I kiss Mary on the top of her head. Ha! Now you are delusional.

"No, you're in denial Hemi. I'm never going to let you go. And you Mary! You fat slut, you're better off leaving my man alone cause sooner or later he's gonna come crawling back to me. He always does. You don't know Hemi as I do. We go back almost ten years! You're a distraction till he comes to his senses."

I get in her face. I am not your man or your husband anymore Nicole. Why can't you move on? I say, It's over.

She completely ignored my comment brushing past me to walk to her car.

She said, Remember it's your turn to take Milan next week. Don't be late.

I turned to Mary, examining her. Are you ok? she nodded, her gray eyes tear lashed. Her dusky blonde hair all messed up. I held the side of her face to examine for bruises. Only a small cut on her chin and lip on her heart shaped face. I'm sorry for all this.

Don't be. She said. I knew what I was getting into when I met you. I didn't think it would be this bad.

I take my phone out, I’m calling the police.

    No. Don’t! I’m alright.

You sure? That’s assault right there?

No don’t. Going to the police is just a waste of time. I’m good.

Nicole is ultra-jealous of you. She won't stop at nothing to ruin our relationship. I threaded my arm around her waist. But that’s never gonna happen because I’m Superman.

Mary chuckles, and I point to the river behind my house.

Let’s go out on the boat, I’ve loaded the chilly bin up with wine and crackers and cheese.

She smiled, everything about that smile is what attracted me to her. Like bait, I was hooked. Line… sinker and all.
