Max you gotta get out now! The fire from the roof is spreading down to your floor! I got my line on it to get it under control. Rachel said.

Copy. I wrenched Natalie up carrying her to Rico, who stood opposite me ten metres apart. The water from the sprinklers soaked Natalie's hair and dress. Thin streams washed away the soot on her face. She passed out. I peered up at the ceiling, the tiles in the middle starting to burn through. Steam and smoke seemed to seep through the perforations, like a gas chamber.

The sound of warping metal and creaks made me off edge as I moved to reach Rico. He looked up when small pieces of debris started dropping in front of him. Plumes of dust, air-con duct piping, and fluorescent tubes came crashing to the ground. Oh shit! Max Get back!

I turned. Ran. Hearing the rumbling crash behind me, I made it back to the elevator. The roof in the middle caved in, and the ball of fire seeped down like a blob of lava. Hollow steely thuds made me hold Natalie more tightly. I patched through to Rachel.

Edge the bucket to the windows on my side and get Natalie!

    Copy.

I peered through the haze of the flames, searching for Rico. I couldn't see shit through the smoke and electrical sparks. I tried to patch through to his radio.

    Rico! Can you hear me?

No response, only crackle, and static with the rumbling sound of the fire in the background.

    Max...

Rico! his voice gave me relief.

    Max... ugh... Shit...

    Are you ok!

I looked through again more of the roof caved in. I caught faint glimpses of Rico through the inferno.

Max my leg is trapped. Ugh, fuck... I'm stuck.

Hold on, I'm coming to get you.

I patched through to Rachel. Where are you?

Max I'm a floor below. I stood to peer out the window, to see the rising bucket with her inside."

Okay. I took my axe to smash out the whole window. White plastic blinds half melted I brushed away then I took to the aluminum framing. I lifted Natalie to the window, the sudden breeze of air rushed in, making her cough. She opened her eyes.

Rachel's bucket lined parallel with the window. Her line focused above drenched the roof above us. She took Natalie in her arms getting her in. Another section of the roof the collapsed exposing the stairwell to the top.

I patched through to Rico. Do you copy! I said again, Rico!

I turned to Rachel who screamed, Get in Max! He's gone!

Those words made my heart rip. She grabbed my arm to pull me in the bucket. I squeezed my eyes. Then I heard the faint sound of breathing through his channel on the radio. I pulled away.

Max The hell are you doing?

I'm getting Rico he's still alive. Get Natalie down and get an appliance on the right side!

Watching the bucket retract away from the wall. The sad faces of Natalie and Rachel imprinted in my mind. Stray orange embers floated in the air the further below they got.

The hiss and static paused on radio, Rico said,

Max... There is a stairwell and a house line, on my side...

    I'm on my way.

The rest of the roof is collapsing.

I walked into one of the rooms in the hallway. The debris and flames blocked me from taking the direct route. I had remembered before the roof collapsed, the two rooms. I grabbed the axe, and took to the walls. The fire partially burned through. I hit hard punching a hole so big I nearly lost the axe. I kept going. Loosening the framing, wood splintered. I punched
