    William Alipate

In the dark dank confines of the meat works, this woman I was holding was responsible for the misery and hurt we suffered. My knuckles were bleeding, my leg was wounded. I just wanted my girlfriend back. I lifted Lt. Natalya Vologin by the collar, her mangled black hair covered her face. Blood and sweat were streaming down the left side of her shaved head, down onto her cheek. I screamed, Where is she! her right eye slowly opened. She smirked, then muttered, She's dead from the hypothermia... Her eye shifted to the black car that was already here when I busted through the corrugated door. I turned to follow her line of vision to the view of water dripping from the boot.

    No!

I shouted her name sliding over, Please be alive, please be alive, Claudia! I said, clutching my leg. I screamed her name again. My beautiful girlfriend, the woman I had yet to ask for her hand in marriage. I stumbled to the car. The place reeked of dead flesh. The putrid smell from all the lamb and beef that were slaughtered here. The large metal meat hooks swaying from the incoming wind made jingling sounds.

I flick my eyes to the body of my Commander George Patrick, who saved my life. His lifeless state. A man I trusted with my life, who betrayed me, only to realize he was doubled crossed. Restoring his honor in his last moment when he shot Natalya.

I stood trying to balance myself as I went across. I'm holding the engagement ring threaded in my dog tags up against my chest. The afternoon sun streams in bringing with it fresh air to replace the scent of decay.

    Claudia!

The image of my girl enters my mind, a flashback of everything we went through. Her sun-kissed dusty blonde hair, her tan skin. The beautiful mole near her nose, I liked to circle with my thumb. I stepped forward to open up the boot of the car. I squeeze my eyes. I see her! She's shivering. Her whole body and clothes are soaking wet. Her skin is pale. I couldn't help it as my tears fell on her... I wrench her body up from the boot to place her on the ground. I remove her clothes wrapping her with the warmth of my body. She’s breathing, shaking.

I shook her again, Baby can you hear me? Her eyes opened, Claudia's upper lip quivered. Tears fell down. She nodded. I cradled her body so close. I wrapped my jacket around us.

I said, Baby, I'm sorry I took so long... I read every message you sent, but I couldn’t reply because they would have killed you. There were things you mentioned in the messages that you felt I held back because of my job as a soldier, but it wasn't that.

    She uttered, Whhat... waasss... ittt?

In my mind, I had fought through a lot to get to this moment. For her to be alive for me to ask her to be my wife.

I rolled around my dog chain, attached to it was a diamond engagement ring. I unhooked it placing the ring in her hand. Claudia held it with her thumb and forefinger. I wrapped my hands around hers blowing hot breath.

Claudia flicked her eyes to the ring like it emanated warmth and love before looking at me. The expression on her face was worth dying for. The wind blew in carrying the warm of the afternoon sun. The light bathed us in its warmth when the flicker of police lights arrived.

I said, Claudia Coe, will you marry me?

She paused, shivering. She licked her lips, tears fell. I wiped away her tears of joy.

She said, Yeess... I... I... Will...

I kissed her before sliding the ring on her finger.

Baby the police are coming, everything will be alright. It's all over.

    Will?

    Yeah, Baby.

    I'm so cold.

Please hang on. Think about our honeymoon being on a warm tropical island. Both of us on lying on the golden sand beach. I would rub lotion on your back. The heat so hot we sip on cocktails to cool. Relaxing, just you and I.

    I'd like that Will…

I pointed, "Look! The ambulance is here. Claudia, I promise I'm gonna put on a massive wedding. A
