    One Summer, Things Will Change

No one ever called Sandee on a Friday night. If she received a call any other day of the week, it was by accident. Either that, or someone she knew needed something. No one ever called because they wanted to hang out. Ever.

Sandee had gotten used to it, but that didn't make it any easier. Her mother and sister assured her that one summer, it would change. They told her how it had happened for them, how they'd each woken up one day with a different face and a different body, and the phone never stopped ringing afterward. Sandee liked that thought even though she knew that would never happen for her. Her mother and her sister had been skinny and a little boyish before their sudden transformations. Sandee was heavy, and she was already as girly as she needed to be. It didn't matter. No one liked her.

Sandee's mother and sister said that once the guys came around, the girls seemed to follow. There would be friends, parties, too much hanging out to manage.

Then you'll have to worry about keeping your focus, her older sister said. Just appreciate the time you have now.

Sandee's older sister had been months away from graduation when she'd found out she was pregnant. As much as Sandee loved her nephew, she wasn't ready to give him a cousin.

Even so, it was the last summer before she would finish high school, so when would this one summer come? It was mid-June when she concluded that she was a late bloomer compared to her mother and sister, so she would have to wait a year or two more. It was a game for Sandee. She didn't believe in it.

    Then came July.

Independence Day came and went. There was no invitation to a barbecue or a fireworks show. Sandee picked up a burger from a fast food joint and watched a few displays of the bright lights and loud sounds that aired on television. It was a miserable day. She cut off the television and went out for an ice cream. She drove down streets lined with cars and people who were out to watch the local show. She saw the bodies on top of cars and trucks staring upward, and she saw the colorful explosions in her rearview mirror, and she licked the mound of cold, sweet ice cream that rose above the rim of the cup, and tears rolled down her cheeks.

    Why not me, she wondered.

On the very next Friday night, the calls started. Sandee ignored her phone. She didn't want to hear another pre-recorded message telling her about the great prize she could win. But her phone rang again and again. She didn't think that many calls could come by mistake, and telephone scammers spaced their calls out more than that. She answered.

    Hey, Sandee? 'Sup, girl?

    Sandee paused. Who is this?

It was Rita Corker, one of Sandee's classmates. They'd had classes together for years, they'd even been partners for a few class assignments, and yet had never had a real conversation. Sandee wasn't sure what to think.

Let's go see a movie, the girl said. That new superhero movie just came out. What's it called? Mosquito Man?"

Sandee looked at her bedroom ceiling. Did you mean to call Sandy Franklin? You probably meant to call the other Sandy.

Rita laughed. No, no! Remember that project we did last year? I never thanked you for doing the entire thing. I'll pay for the tickets and candy.

Sandee's thoughts lingered on candy but only for a few seconds. It was easier to think about candy than the situation in front of her. She sighed. She had nothing to lose. If she went to the movie theater and no one was there, she could always go to the movie by herself.

While Sandee made plans to meet Rita, call and message alerts rang and buzzed in her ear. She didn't check them until after she squeezed into her jeans and climbed into her little black car. There was message after message from classmates she knew and didn't know. They were all inviting her to go out. There were even messages
