About This Sampler
"Rip Van Winkle's been awake for near two hundred years,
He hasn't shut his eyes to sleep, he has too many fears,
And day by day he cries until he hasn't any tears,
All because the future's past and time is in arrears."
Imagine that nothing you know about the world is correct, that there is more in heaven and on earth, and within your best friends, and your lover than you could ever know. Could you trust anything? Could you take a single step forward, backward, or to the side with confidence?

Fifty Muses
The moment the door closed with barely a thud, I heard the gun cock. Strangely, I knew this sound instantly, although I had never heard it before. My face to the door, afraid to move suddenly, I spoke to the person pointing the gun at my back.
Lela?
Lela was a flower in the midst of the jungle. She was a rare jewel in the ocean. She was the realization of a symphony yet to be conceived. In the short months I had known her, she had granted possibility to every dream I could ever imagine. But within a few days things had changed.
Move away from the door.
Carefully, I turned around.
After recent discussions--arguments--during which basic impressions I'd had of her broke down, I thought she might use the gun to threaten her own life. Looking at her, I could see that she meant me harm. I did as she instructed me, but the weapon followed me.
Are you going to kill me?
The coal makeup rimming her eyes came from crying and smearing. Despite this she looked like the girls in the magazines, all glistening and oily with mussed hair and a vulnerable demeanor the way that a man desires to see a woman. I had to tell myself it was the wrong time for desire. She sniffed, then swallowed.
No.
Fifty muses, or maybe demi-muses, were burned alive, utterly cleansed and purified, shined up all pretty and shunted to earth. That's what she told me. Every third generation, these fifty would begin a new life again with absolutely no knowledge of their past or their purpose. An order of tutors would have to find them and educate them and empower them to fulfill their mission.
Lela told me that she'd found them one year ago after a breathtakingly beautiful woman had encouraged her to
