I've lived most of my life in Los Angeles and earned my living for twenty years by working in television production. I was always interested in writing and dabbled at it, but not seriously. I combined my interest in writing with my avocation of photography and began doing magazine articles featuring my photographs. After selling several articles, I discovered I enjoyed the writing process as much as the photography. My friends told me I should make use of my television contacts and write scripts. I enrolled in a screen writing class at UCLA. By the close of class I knew screen writing was not for me. The other thing I knew was that I wanted to write novels rather than magazine articles.

    Prologue

Damian Fontaine stepped out to the bedroom balcony and closed his eyes as he tilted his head back, his senses fully alert. His mind reached out, searching for the signs that said someone needed his special type of help, needed his assistance in achieving the hidden sexual desires and fantasies that fear, inhibitions, intimidations, or embarrassment kept secreted away. The vibrations drifted on the wind, swirling around inside his consciousness without revealing their meaning or source. Someone…he couldn't make out the message. Not yet. But soon.

Deeply buried secrets, repressed desires, suppressed fantasies—nothing remained beyond his knowledge. When dealing with a person’s hidden yearnings, his persuasive abilities never failed to produce the preferred end result—pleasure for him and for the mortal, the freedom to enjoy those same pleasures. A win-win situation. But he drew the line at forcing someone to participate in something they truly didn't want even though he found it exciting.

He remained on the balcony of his palatial mansion located on his private island and watched the sun rise as if being levitated from the ocean below by an unseen hand.

Even though Damian had been permanently banished to earth as a fallen angel, he still retained most of his powers. He allowed a soft chuckle as he recalled that fateful summoning to the throne eight hundred years ago. Engaging in illicit activities with mortals…associating with witches, vampires, and other unholy entities…wild excesses of the flesh…decadence without remorse…no hope of redemption. Ah, yes. He willingly pled guilty on all counts—pleasure his credo, sex his deity.

It had been a night of fun and games with Arista and Colton, Damian Fontaine's favorite vampire couple. But the one drawback to partying with vampires was their need to return to their resting place before sunrise. As the moment of daylight approached, the two vampires disappeared in a rush of swirling air.

It amused him, some of the misconceptions mortals harbored as truths. Some mortals vehemently believed vampires didn't exist, that they were merely a figment of the imagination, fictional characters born from the ignorance of bygone times. Others accepted their existence as demonic tools of the devil and attributed many inaccurate characteristics to them. In reality, neither garlic nor the sight of a cross repelled them. Their reflection could be seen in a mirror. And heightened sexual activity had them gasping for air though they didn't need to breathe in order to exist. It was something Damian, as a fallen angel, had in common with his vampire friends—gasping for air when in the throes of sex in spite of not needing the oxygen.

Damian picked up the jar of raspberry gel Arista had left for him when she and Colton departed with the approach of sunrise. He studied the label for a couple of seconds, then set it aside and stared at the waves crashing on the rocks below. The sun sparkled off the water. A breeze ruffled his hair, carrying with it the fragrance of the flower garden in the side courtyard. Restlessness consumed him, as it always did when he went too long without any meaningful activity to occupy his time.

He certainly advocated having fun. He liked a raunchy party as much as the next immortal. He could easily fuck all day and all night as the most perfect pastime and still want more. But he also needed a sense of accomplishment that partying couldn’t provide.

    Chapter One

Several mission possibilities had come across his consciousness, but none that really intrigued him except one still in the formative stage. He closed his eyes and again tuned into the vibrations reaching out to him. Something faint, but growing stronger. A woman, very sad and lonely. Filled with despair. A buried hint of longing trying to break through.

She had money and the freedom to go wherever she wished and do whatever she wanted. Her biggest fear, however, had forced her into a solitary life, more like a hermit than a functioning member of society. The thing that terrified her most was someone taking advantage of her…again. A man seeking her out only because of her money. Someone to whom she would give her trust and her heart only to be cruelly betrayed by his callousness, selfishness, and greed.

She had been deeply hurt by just such a man and was afraid to trust anyone, especially with her emotions. She disliked the idea of keeping a private investigator on retainer to run background checks on everyone she met. It made her feel calculating and turned the possibility of a personal relationship into a cold and impersonal interaction.

So, she avoided any type of circumstances where she might become involved with a man who cared about her money rather than her. She could try to hide her wealth, but had no way of knowing if the man she’d met had already checked her out. That what seemed to be an innocent meeting wasn’t actually a calculated move on his part as a ploy to take advantage of her.

She had an attorney who had handled her father’s legal matters for several years. She had sort of inherited him along with her father’s estate when he died fifteen years ago. Her relationship with her attorney had always been strictly business. And as far as financial matters were concerned, her degree in business and a financial planner certificate made her more than capable of taking care of her own investments and financial affairs.

One of the things she desperately wanted was a physical relationship. The man who had betrayed her so cruelly had done it by way of the bedroom. He had told her so many lies in order to gain her trust, not the least of which was proclaiming his love for her, telling her she was an exciting lover, that the first time they made love he knew he
