Fairy Icepack - Emily Martha Sorensen

    Chapter One

Viola yelped as she tripped over a green plastic pony and landed splat on the floor.

Are you okay?! Sunflower shouted, running over.  Is your tibia undamaged?!

Viola had no idea what the second question meant, so she just answered the first one.  I’m okay, she said, trying to push herself up from the floor.  As she did, her ankle twisted, and she plopped down again, yelling, Ow!  Ow!  No, I’m not!

Her ankle hurt worse than anything she’d ever felt before.  It burned like fire.  Tears sprang to her eyes.

Bianca, her other friend who had come over to play, jumped up and opened the door.  Viola’s mooooooom! she shouted.  Viola’s mooooooooom!  Viola hurt hersellllllf!

There was a pounding sound as her mother ran up the stairs, and Viola sniffled a bit.  Her ankle was throbbing.  Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow.

What happened? Viola’s mother asked, appearing in the doorway.  Viola, are you okay?

No, Viola said.  Tears rose up in her eyes.  My ankle hurts.

I think she fractured her tibia! Sunflower exclaimed.

She tripped over the pony and fell down, Bianca added.

Viola’s mother took in the messy room, which she had told Viola to clean last week and Viola hadn’t, and then looked down at Viola’s ankle.

I hope it isn’t broken, but this is exactly why I told you to clean your room, she snapped.

    Viola started sobbing.

We need to take her to the doctor! Bianca cried.

She might have pulverized her talus! Sunflower exclaimed.

Viola’s mother got down to feel Viola’s ankle.

    That hurts! Viola wailed.

It’s probably not that bad, Viola’s mother said.  Let me get you an icepack, and if it still hurts in a few hours, we’ll take you to the doctor.

    Sunflower nodded.

Viola started crying again.  She didn’t want to go to the doctor.  The last time she had gone there, the doctor had stuck her with a needle.  She didn’t like the doctor.

Her mother left the room and came back with a greyish-blue stiff thing.  She wrapped it around Viola’s ankle.  It was cold, which made Viola shiver, but it made her ankle not hurt quite as much as before.

Let me know if you need another one, Viola’s mother said.  I thought we only had one, but I found two in the freezer.

Viola nodded, tears pricking at the sides of her eyes.  Her ankle didn’t hurt quite as much, but it still hurt.

Can we still play? Sunflower asked anxiously.  We were just at the point where Cinderella was about to tell the Three Little Pigs they can go to the ball.

"The Three Little Ponies, Bianca reminded her.  We couldn’t find Viola’s toy pigs."

I suppose that’s up to Viola, her mother said.

Viola didn’t really want to play anymore, but Sunflower and Bianca looked at her pleadingly.  She didn’t want to disappoint her friends.

Okay, she said.  We can keep playing.

Just let me know if you need anything else, Viola’s mother nodded, and left the room.

Viola’s ankle still hurt, but she soon got so absorbed in Little Red Riding Hood telling the wolf she would not be his date to the ball that she barely noticed it.  Whenever she tried to move, her ankle reminded her she was hurt, and she would gasp for a moment.  Noticing that, Bianca and Sunflower scooted all the toys next to her, and they held the ball on a blanket Sunflower pulled off Viola’s bed instead of in her dollhouse.

You’re such a naughty wolf! Viola shouted, making the Little Red Riding Hood doll tackle a pink pony.  They’d used a pony for the wolf, too, because they hadn’t been able to find her wolf toy.  I told you not to follow me here!

But I promise not to eat your grandmother again! Bianca said, trying to help the pink pony escape.

You still haven’t fixed our houses, Sunflower said for the Three Little Ponies, holding up one of them as she danced it across
