Fairy Compass - Emily Martha Sorensen
Chapter One
Daisy’s sisters hogged all the attention.
"But I have to get that jacket. Everybody has one," Aneeka begged, hopping up and down.
Candy! Candy! Candy!
Shelby shouted, dragging at her father’s hand towards a toy store.
You have baby-sitting money. Save up for it,
Daisy’s father said. And no, Shelby, no candy. But we can get a hot dog at the food court.
Hot doggggggggg!
Shelby said.
"But I have to get it now! Aneeka wailed.
I spent all my money last week!"
Then consider this a lesson in fiscal responsibility.
Aneeka stamped her foot. Her face was all pinched together like she was about to cry.
Is she going to throw a tantrum, just like Shelby? Daisy wondered, interested. I can’t believe Aneeka’s older than me.
Daisy, what do you think, hot dog?
her father asked, glancing back.
Daisy straightened and opened her mouth to answer.
If I don’t get anything at the food court, can I have the money for my jacket instead?
Aneeka begged.
I told you fiscal responsibility, not starvation,
Daisy’s father said, swinging his head around.
I wouldn’t mind a hot dog,
Daisy said.
Candyyyyy!
Shelby shouted.
Daisy’s father and sisters moved ahead toward the nearest mall escalator. But Daisy noticed something glinting on the ground, and paused to pick it up. It looked sort of like a clock, except it had a lot more hands, and one of them was red.
As her hands touched it, the red hand swung around to face the opposite way.
Hey, what’s this?
Daisy asked, holding it up. The dented and dusty silver thing dangled from a small ring. It looked kind of old and scuffed, like it had been kicked around because nobody’d noticed it.
If you want more money, you can earn it by baby-sitting Shelby,
Daisy’s father said as they headed down the escalator.
Aneeka moaned.
Daisy ran to catch up with them. She was panting as they reached the bottom.
Hey, Dad, what’s this?
she asked, holding up the dented silver thing. I think somebody dropped it upstairs.
Daisy’s father glanced over. Huh, looks like a compass. I have one just like that. We should take it to the lost and found.
Daisy tried to hand it to him.
"What if I did the baby-sitting after I got my jacket?" Aneeka bargained, clasping her hands together.
Daisy’s father swung around. That’s called being in debt, and no.
Chocolate!
Shelby squealed as they passed a store that sold really fancy candy. She let go of her father’s hand and bolted for the store.
No!
Daisy’s father shouted, dashing after her.
Daisy held the compass in front of her, shaking it to see if anything would happen. A blue blur zoomed in front of her face, and the red hand spun around to face it.
Daisy’s head jerked up. What was that?
she asked.
What?
Aneeka asked. She was folding her arms and scowling.
That blue thing that just flew by,
Daisy said, her heart pounding. She still felt startled. She gestured with her hand. Was it a bird?
In the mall?
Aneeka snorted. As if.
It would be strange to see a bird in the mall, Daisy thought, looking around at the ceiling. But I could have sworn I saw . . .
There it was! There was the blue thing! Hovering way up near the . . . ceiling . . .
Daisy’s mouth opened. There were dozens of them.
Can you see that?
she gasped, elbowing Aneeka.
Aneeka swatted her arm away. See what?
The blue blurry things!
Daisy squeaked. Flying around the ceiling!
Aneeka glanced up and snorted. There’s nothing up there. Do you need glasses or something?
Daisy’s heart hammered. Her hands squeezed the compass.
