Riddled by the Sphinx - Alana Melos

    Chapter One

When both of them touched the Key at the same time, the red light bloomed from the Key of Janus, hurling them into the crimson void. Dirk felt relief gush through him. No longer were they falling from a waterfall to their certain doom, but rather falling through time and space to an uncertain fate. Better this than death, he thought to himself. As before, he could feel his body changing as the vortex swirled around them, morphing him into whatever the world wanted him to be, or needed to be.

The light faded from around them, and the first thing he felt was hot. The ground burned and shifted beneath him, and the sun beat down on him from above. He blinked a few times, and started to sit up, coughing out a mouthful of sand. Where are we? he wondered, looking around. In the distance, he could see some structures, one of which appeared to be a pyramid. Beneath him lay the shifting sands of a desert. Above him, there was only a cloudless sky with the sun. Egypt? he asked of his sister. Debbie?

Near him lay an attractive woman, dressed in a short linen dress, pleated. She had some jewelry on from what he could see--a couple of bangles around her wrists, and what might have been a neckpiece. Her hair, shorter than it had been previously if this was his sister, lay around her shoulders as she stirred, moving with the wind in a gentle ebony wave. Her face was exquisite, exotic, and of what seemed to be of regal bearing to his unpracticed eye. The color of his skin was a beautiful dark brown, of the color of mahogany. My head… the girl muttered. She sat up, holding her head, and looked around. She spied him right away, as they had fallen next to each other as they had the previous two worlds. Dirk?

First pet? he asked to make sure this was his sister.

Cat named Key-Key, black and white short hair… She rubbed her temple and looked down at herself. Favorite toy?

Oscar the Grouch stuffed animal, he replied, relief once again surging through him. This was, indeed, his sister… just changed yet again on the mad god’s whim.

"That was my Oscar, she growled. You stole him!"

Mom gave him to me, sis, give it a rest, Dirk said, trying to set the decades long argument to rest. "You got Big Bird… and hey, what’s that beside you?"

Debbie looked to her side, and picked up a black bow, of a different style than her previous one. A bow… must be the same weapon, but… She looked around and found a quiver nearby. His twin sister picked it up and turned it over, But empty. We ran out, firing at those pixies.

We could have talked them down, Dirk said, finally standing up and stretching. He had acclimated a little bit to the weather, and noted that he was barefoot, as many ancient Egyptians had been. When he looked at the bottom of his feet, he had calluses on them which prevented him from feeling much of the heat from the sand. You didn’t need to fire on them.

"They were going to kill me, Dirk!" she exclaimed, standing up as well with the bow in her hand.

What did you do to them? he asked and was not prepared for his twin sister’s explosion.

"What did I do to them?! she shrieked, looking at him incredulously. They thought I was someone else, a sidhe, whatever the heck that is!"

"And what did they actually do?" Dirk asked again, taken aback by her reaction.

They… they…. she started, and then fell silent, her cheeks turning a darker shade.

Dirk rubbed his clean-shaved chin as he studied his sister. That reaction felt very familiar to him… maybe because it was practically the same reaction he had when she had quizzed him about the raptors interrogating him. Hot, torrid, dinosaur love had been made, which had been even more embarrassing for him since he wasn’t gay and the dino in question had been a male. Did you have sex with them?

Debbie jerked her head up and stared at him, boring holes with her dark, chocolate brown eyes. She opened her mouth to reply, closed it, and then looked away. Yes, she admitted. "It was… there were these berries and they made me really… ready, you know?"

He nodded, and dusted off his clothing--easy to do since it was only a linen skirt. Again, he stood barechested. As he looked his sister over, noting the dress she wore barely covered her rear assets, he knew their clothing choices were because of the Roman god Janus, bouncing them through dimensions. Normal Egyptian attire for women would have the pleats of her dress fall down to
