Emotional Intelligence - Leslie Dunn
Introduction
What exactly is emotional intelligence?
In its purest sense, emotional intelligence is mastery of your own emotions and your reactions to others’ emotions. Beyond book smarts which guarantee you a decent GPA in college and most likely a few good job offers after graduation, emotional intelligence is what guides an individual to manage difficult, high-voltage situations easily.
Emotional intelligence begins with first understanding and then managing your own emotions, but it also goes beyond that.
People with high emotional intelligence are able to detect, interpret and respond to others’ emotions and signals. This set of interpersonal skills makes negotiations, navigating the world as a whole and personal relationships easier and more fulfilling.
It can refer to the innate ability some people have to recognize a range of emotions and their relationships and to act upon them—emotional intelligence ultimately leads to stronger personal relationships, business dealings and a more fulfilled life in general that is not victim to unchecked emotional highs and lows (from yourself or others).
The term emotional intelligence
dates back to the 1990 article Emotional Intelligence
by Yale researchers Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer where they defined the term as the subset of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one's own and others' feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one's thinking and actions.
Though worded differently by various psychologists and self-help authors in the market, there are four main facets to emotional intelligence and mastery.
Self-Awareness: Understanding your emotions, triggers and challenges. What sets you off? What calms you? What energizes you and makes you feel unstoppable? Understanding your own current emotional make up is critical to moving into the world of mastering emotional intelligence.
Mastering Your Emotions: Once you get the whys, it’s time to focus on the hows. How can I optimize my response to high-stress situations? How can I sense my triggers and respond accordingly? How can I change certain responses that are damaging my personal relationships? Undertaking self-mastery opens doors in your life for improvement immediately, even before you take your first steps in working with social emotional intelligence.
Social Awareness: Think of this pillar as the ability to read people. Your ability to sense bad moods, anxiety and aggression in others makes responding accordingly easy as your improve your emotional intelligence. But before you can interact in the right way, you need the ability to identify others’ emotions, which is isn’t always an easy
